Height problems
I’m 5′2 fight me
Okay so, there's been a lot of relationship shtuffs going on around here (which I obviously love), and I've gotten a fair bit of commentary and interest about my characters' relationships and dynamics as well
Long story short, I'm aro, kind of been coming to terms with that in the last 18 months, and I've realized a lot about the way I perceive relationships as a result.
Long story long, I love platonic relationships, and I commit to them with my whole being, so that is very clearly reflected in my characters. It was really important to me that I built a community and real support systems for my characters, so many of them are starting with that in place, while others will be built as I develop them and their interpersonal relationships more (Julie and Leo).
So Jayden-Alix-Keegan is my trio of unbreakable relationships, both of the romantic (Jay/Lex) and platonic (Lex/Key, Jay/Key) varieties. But I've seen enough people pour their souls into a romantic relationship that didn't end well, that I needed everybody to have someone platonic that they could turn to. The way @bellysoupset's Leo turns to Vince, or Jonah to Wendy. This is why Keegan and Jayden have that *something* that no one else could match, or why Alix might sometimes rely on Keegan for things instead of Jayden.
I used my trio here because they're the most clear-cut example, but it's also true across Colin-Rowyn-Jamie-Charlie-Max. In "The Deterioration of Date Night", Max could be a good caretaker, but they don't push Jamie quite enough to give him what he needs. That's why Colin was so much more effective, because he made Jamie talk about it, he pushed a little harder.
Anyway, I know I came into this with a lot of characters, but I needed to build beyond romantic relationships to places where I'm a bit more comfortable, because honestly, I'm so sick of romantic and sexual relationships being prioritized in this society
So this is why my characters all live together basically, why they all interact so much in such a familiar way, and why their relationships are kind of complicated.
To kind of specifically answer @writing-whump's question, I decided on romantic relationships early, and then I determined who that kind of #1 emotional support friend would be for everyone, whether they know it yet or not. And then just their personalities kind of decided it too. I didn't plan for Max and Charlie to be that close, initially it was supposed to be Charlie and Jamie who were extra close, but then Charlie and Max just went together and it makes more sense now for that to be the case. And of course there's flexibility in these pairings and their romantic partners are often the first person they turn to for things, but I needed something to structure interactions around :)
yesterday my partner and i were standing in the kitchen, eating from a tub of ice cream and talking about nothing rlly but we started to make silly noises back and forth at each other inbetween bites, and i just looked at them and realized how lucky i am to have someone i get to be a weird lil guy with all the time and never feel like i have to play it cool love is so freakin sick yall
I love teasing my girlfriends and making the Little Bastard Man Face™ while pretending that I have no idea what I'm doing lol
