We love to hear about our Workshops alum doing wonderful things! Melanie Zoey, who participated in our 2013 workshop, recently co-produced, MENASHE, A24's first foreign language film! Shot in New York in the Yiddish language, the film's trailer recently dropped. Be on the look out for this one on July 28!

We will be in the Big Apple this Saturday, March 1st for a Relativity Workshops open house. Students, parents and educators will have the opportunity to interface with our Admissions team, asking questions about our workshops and getting more information about the student experience.
Celina Polanco will lead a Q&A about Relativity Workshops as well as a fantastic workshops on Powerful Introductions & Branding, an informative overview for creating digital content!

Attend A Workshop With Relativity In Georgia This Week!
Relativity Workshops is attending the Georgia Thespians Festival in Columbus this week with a set of unique classes and workshops.
Relativity's VP Boyle will be teaching his Pop/Rock Musical Theatre and Build Your Book Workshops. Relativity will also present a course in Creating Digital Content To Propel Your Career.

Relativity Workshops is offering a 5-week EDM evening workshop that starts February 18, 2014. The course, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9pm, will teach all students how to make their own tracks.
Students will learn about technical execution of MIDI based software and hardware instruments, manipulation of pre-recorded audio, effects, synthesizer, design of patches, build of a sampler instrument, and mixing. At the end of the course, each student will have produced one finished music track.
Guest appearances from industry leaders and DJs will include Andy Caldwell (Light/Vegas). In addition, students will gain marketing insight into how to get tracks on TV and film.

300 Producer says you have to be prepared to succeed
Relativity School is honored to partner with some incredible industry mavens to offer an insider look at the film and entertainment industry. Included in the group is producer Mark Canton, with credits including "300," "Immortals" and "The Spiderwick Chronicles."
In his insider look, Mark expresses that we "live in a world that has a very short attention span." It is necessary to be original and to approach your work as something new and unique, not a mirror of what has been previously done. Mark says the best way to prepare is to go to a program such as Relativity School, where groundbreaking ideas won't be just embraced, they'll be expected. Mark puts it as such:
"You should educate yourself so you can advance the medium, not just be in it. Go to a university or a program or a mentorship where people pay attention to your work and to you."
Mark continues on, explaining that "in a good program, real results can happen." Relativity School had the pleasure of watching incredible films come out of our 2013 summer programs, and we can't wait to see the work that evolves from our students in 2014.
Mark's best piece of advice? "Be prepared to succeed, not just to fail." We definitely hope that success is problem we can help you navigate this year, teaching you how to use your success to move forward in the industry and better your following projects!
Judges Announced for Open Call
Relativity School is a proud sponsor of Open Call, the only competition connecting dancers to career opportunities in a professional performance atmosphere. A list of all star judges have been announced for January events in Columbus, Ohio and Kansas City, Montana. The list includes "So You Think You Can Dance" choreographer Lindsay Nelko and "Glee" dancer Judson Emery.
At both events, Relativity School will be scouting dancers for upcoming summer dance intensives. Relativity's exclusive Commercial Dance Intensive is developed in partnership with MSA, the global leader in dance and choreography representation and offers young artists the opportunity to learn the tools necessary to propel their careers in all areas of commercial dance. The focus of Relativity's three week program is on the artist/actor with classes in acting techniques, improvisation, content creation, and on-camera training. Students participate in master workshops with exclusive guest choreographers and exposure to industry leaders in the entertainment industry. All Commercial Dance participants create three pieces of original digital content including a dance solo, partner scene and and interdisciplinary group project guided by an industry mentor.
Relativity School has been incredibly impressed with the phenomenal dancers we got the opportunity to meet at similar events in 2013, and we can't wait to meet you at the next dance convention!

Nathan Webb: "Three weeks at Relativity was great but I want more!"
"Getting the opportunity to wake up everyday and go to work with people who love what they do as much you do, collaborating on your own projects whilst working with top industry professionals at LA Center Studios! It sounds like a dream but that's what we did!"
Nathan Webb says as soon as he heard about Relativity School, he "wanted one of those acting spots! The chance to create your own work in a professional studio with industry professionals and like-minded creatives was too much a good opportunity to miss." Nathan enrolled in Relativity's three-week adult acting workshop. Relativity took a few minutes to catch up with Nathan and find out what he thought of the program and what he is working on now:
Hey Nathan! How was your experience in the three-week acting intensive?
Being in the acting program was amazing. I'm not overstating this when I say that the three weeks single-handedly changed my approach to my work, the way I conduct myself in meetings, how I create contacts within the industry and my general outlook on being part of the business.
How were the teachers?
All my tutors were exceptional and took the time to advise each of us. Small class sizes meant that we had that time to focus individually whilst also having the time to collaborate. Writing our own material was a stroke of genius as it added so much more to the showreel instead of your usual audition pieces that you see on so many showreels.
Do you have a favorite class?
My favorite class was Acting in Film with Lee Cohn. I really identified with Lee's teaching style and his book A Practical Handbook for the Actor should be in any serious actor's library.
Equally, I really enjoyed and learned a lot from Celina Polanco's Business seminar about how we as actors conduct and network ourselves as our own business. It's something I had struggled with before attending and learnt a lot of uselful tips! Thank you Celina!
I also loved doing the audition work with Marwa Bernstein. Marwa took what I was doing before auditions and completely reshaped it and showed me how to approach each piece of text with the same enthusiasm. Cold auditions don't worry me like they did before because Marwa gave me the tools to attack them!
What was the biggest challenge for you?
The biggest challenge for sure was the Improv workshops. I've never been keen on Improv and I openly admit I struggle with it. Or at least I did before attending. I was lucky I got to work with my Relativity teacher Lucas. His background in Improv is immense and he taught me so many techniques and exercises that completely changed my approach and enthusiasm for improv. I actually use quite a few of those techniques now when preparing for a role and preparing for auditions. I can't thank Lucas enough for that because it's given me a new depth that I can reach with my character.
So what's next? Do you still want to act?
I certainly still want to act! The course on a whole has made me want to explore all areas of the industry. I am now in the process of producing some of my own short films. My goal is to produce one piece of my own work every month and work on as many acting projects as I can to boost my portfolio. I'm very interested in getting behind the camera and learning a lot more of that side of the industry. I think one of the main things I learned is the more you can understand all aspects of putting a film together (no matter your chosen job on a film) the better you will be in your chosen field.
Since finishing the program I've been writing a lot and auditioning. I have several roles coming up in the new year which I'm very excited about and I'm in the process of signing with an agency for acting. I'm currently in the pre-production stages on one of my short films with three more in the development stage! Exciting times! I'm also working on a script with fellow alums Nick Portanova (Directing Program) and Allen Kunkle (Acting for Film program) which I'm very excited about! Were hoping to all come together next year and produce something that epitomizes the skills we've learned...and it's a great excuse for us all to meet up! (Not that we need one.)
Would you recommend other individuals to Relativity School?
Absolutely! I think if you really want to pursue having a profession within the film industry then Relativity is a school you should attend. I'd love to go back and do a full three year course. Three weeks was great but I want more! Getting the opportunity to wake up everyday and go to work with people who love what they do as much you do, collaborating on your own projects whilst working with top industry professionals at LA Center Studios! It sounds like a dream but that's what we did!
Also getting advice from experienced Producers, Directors, and Casting Professionals, touring the TV studios with the top execs and special guests, and being given the freedom to explore your own creativity made for the best three weeks you could ask for. Thank you Relativity!

What do Relativity School and Mad Men Have in Common?
Relativity School students film their projects at Los Angeles Center Studios, the same lot where films including Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Catch Me If You Can were produced, as well as the hit series Mad Men.
That's right - students can at any point bump into Jon Hamm between takes.
Students have access to professional camera-ready sets including authentic looking hospital rooms, jail cells, the morgue, outdoor cityscapes, a courtroom, and other ordinarily hard-to-find locations—even an outdoor gas station. Relativity students are treated like professionals and work in professional settings with high quality industry equipment.
