How big is Ultra Trail Running where you are?
Hi! It’s not very big, in the sense that more than 90% of Bulgarians, I’m sure, don’t even know that there are people out there who run 100+ kilometers (in the mountains on top of that). That’s because not a lot of people here can even conceptualize what running 10k, 21k or 50k is, since they don’t run. But even with joggers, there aren’t a lot of ‘em who are invested in trail running.
With that being said, I haven’t talked a lot about this on here, but my brother is an ultramarathon trail runner and he just won his first race - it’s called Belasitsa Sky Run and it’s 68 kilometres in the Belasitsa mountain range. We have 39 mountains in Bulgaria, so there are plenty of races. The most popular one is Vitosha 100 - 100km through Vitosha mountain, situated right on the outskirts of the capital city, Sofia, where I’m from. Other relatively big trail running races are Pirin Ultra (distances: 66km and 160km, this year the “short” distance was the last race of the Skyrunning World Series), Tryavna Ultra (distances: 76km and 141km), Persenk Ultra (distances: 50km, 110km, 160km). These are the first ones that I can think of.Hope this gives you an overall idea of how things are! Thanks for the ask!
