The human brain is a funny thing. It has a hard time being able to rate things. As much as we want to remember the past the present comes to focus and we loose sight of the good things the past has brought us. New events almost always seem to outweigh the old events.
Have you ever gone out with a friend and they ordered a hamburger and said, “This is the best hamburger I have ever tasted!” In most cases they have said that about every good hamburger they have tasted. Just like the judges on singing competitions like American Idol, for example, have said, “This is the best performance I have ever seen!” I am positive they say that about every week.
We always seem to focus on the here and now. For most humans the most recent is the most important. This is why a lot of relationships fall apart. You can have a good relationship with a friend for three years, but one argument can shake it to its roots. It is easy to forget and it it easy to drift apart from both God and your friends.
Back in the olden days when someone has fallen away from God they us the term “They forgot the Lord our God.” In a Christians life time there had to be a point where they have fallen away from God and lost sight of what is important, even if it was only for a short time. You or someone you know that has fallen away from our Lord almost always returns. In the Bible when some one returns back to God they first thing they do is spend time to remember what God has done for them. It is important to always see what God has done for you in your life and thank Him for those amazing things.
In Joshua Chapter 3 it talks about when the priest's stepped into the Jordan River and then the part of the river dries up so God’s people may walk across. In remembrance of this amazing event twelve men, one from each of the twelve tribes, carried a stone and placed in on the shore. This was supposed to make them remember that event that had happened there. Back then that was what they did to remember important or major event because cell phone camera’s didn't exist back then. (I know hard to imagine living with out your phone!) The rocks were also to resemble the incredible amount of faith they had to put in God to be able to step into that river. One day I hope that I can have that amount of faith in God and take the step into the river.
