Should I DJ With Remixes?
When I was still actively buying vinyl records, I remember having to choose between the album version of the single and the remix or mash-up version of the record. They each had strengths, yet I did not have the funds to buy both of them. By buying the single, I had access to the acapella as well as the instrumental track – but buying the mixed record automatically gave me a good 8 bars of transition before the start of each song. It’s funny that I had this problem, because looking back on it now I should have taken both of them. Today, there is no need to choose between either, you can simply create your own mixed versions of a song. This doesn’t imply that you are cheating, you are simply editing out parts to make it easier to transition into during a set. Should a new DJ feel any worse for using a mixed or remixed song instead of the original? I think there is no shame in using a tool, so long as you recognize that a tool is what it is. As long as original mixing skills are not hurt by the use of tools, then there is no reason not to use it. http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2013/11/questions-dj-remixes/
