Small town, small minds
Before I came up here I have to admit that yeah, I was nervous about whether I would fit in. It's a pretty small town and not exactly all-up on the latest fashion trends or um... store trading times. But the main thing I was concerned about was that I identify as aboriginal, but have fair skin, and I am a lesbian. I was coming from being in a capital city where I was largely involved in the aboriginal arts community, accepted, and didn't fee like I needed to explain myself. While I've never been someone that has publicly advocated for gay rights or gone to any gay pride rallies - my family accepts me, and I wouldn't think twice about holding a girls hand when I'm walking down the street. Perhaps I took that for granted.
No one here knows that I'm gay. Because.. well.. it's not like I introduce myself like, 'Hi I'm Roxy and I'm a lesbian'. :/ I don't look like the stereotypical lesbian, so people just assume I'm straight. Which is fine, I don't really care, and it's not like I have a partner up here or anything and it's not like I'm looking for one. But yesterday I had to do a mandatory cultural sensitivity course and ironically, it was one of the most horrible days I've had this year. I left questioning my identity as an aboriginal and questioned whether I would ever feel comfortable here with the small minds of a small community. The presenter was outwardly homophobic, referred to me as a white australian (even though I said I was aboriginal - obviously she thought my skin was too fair) and just completely undermined every point she was trying to make, by following up with uneducated, 1950's views.
I know culture is an integral part of this community, but when asking for acceptance from one group, why is it okay to marginalise another?
Stray dog fostering
Slowly, but surely, I’ve become accustomed to living in a town overrun with dogs. Dogs that lazily lie on the grass verge outside the supermarket. That congregate outside the post office. That pad along the street, occasionally ducking into your front yard to mark their territory.
Overrun is hyperbole. An exaggeration. Every time I see a pregnant dog I’m reminded we are only a litter of puppies…
