MedMan movie gets a drive-in World Premiere as part of 51st NashFest!

It’s official! Medicine Man: The Stan Brock Story - our movie about Tennessee-based Remote Area Medical founder Stan Brock - has been selected for Nashville Film Festival 2020!

RAM Clinic 1000 in Chilhowee Park!

In early February, Remote Area Medical hosted its 1000th clinic at the Jacob Building in Knoxville’s Chilhowee Park. 

Core RAM volunteer Kay Sisco was on the scene for Number 1000. She visited the Stan Brock memorabilia exhibition which ran in the building at the same time, which continued celebration of his life well lived - Stan died at the very end of August 2018. The exhibition featured a wide variety of items, including Stan’s first RAM logo drawings, photos from RAM Expedition Number 1 (Mexico) and much more! This was also 2019 Clinic #1.

Discouragement

During the weekend, I volunteered with RAM - Remote Area Medical and I was so discouraged to be there. We drove there and paid money out of pocket to stay at a hotel to VOLUNTEER. I learned that people don’t realize how lucky they are to get medical, dental, and vision care for FREE. I had a guy throw a sandwich a me to throw away his trash. Some people were extremely rude and ungrateful. People took time off to come and provide them with services and they are complaining about that they have to wait. This was my second year coming out but this year was more ungrateful people there than last year. But I’m glad that RAM exists for people that genuinely appreciate what everyone did for them!

RAM’s Appalachian Fairgrounds Clinic in pictures - by Kay Sisco

Hi! My name is Kay and I’m a Core Volunteer. This weekend marks the first Remote Area Medical clinic at the Appalachian Fairgrounds in Gray, Tennessee.  So that makes it special. As noted by WJHL, this clinic replaces the Bristol Motor Speedway as the flagship expedition for the Tri-Cities region. 

Having worked the RAM clinic in Southern California last weekend I can definitely appreciate RAM has support on both US coasts and there are various Tri-Cities regions across the country- but for the uninitiated the Tri-Cities region I refer to here is that comprising the cities of Kingsport, Johnson City, and Bristol and the surrounding smaller towns and communities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. All three cities are located in Northeast Tennessee, while Bristol has a twin city of the same name in Virginia.

The three day Gray clinic is providing free dental, vision and medical, also flu vaccinations, oral cancer screenings, and Hepatitis C and HIV tests. In addition, vendors have been offering health education and other resources to patients.

I’ve managed to get around the clinic - from Registration to Dental and beyond - over the last 2 days to show you what the very first Gray clinic looks like. Here’s my photo essay! Hope you enjoy the tour and thanks for your support of RAM!

Volunteering at Remote Area Medical - RAM for 3 days

I went to Bradenton, FL for 3 days to help out RAM. It was an amazing experience. I got to meet so many hearted people and we provided care for over 900 patients, worth 500,000$, all for free. We provided dental, general, and optical care. I mainly volunteered with the optical section and helped out deliver food to patients from Salvation Army. I got to perform visual acuity tests on over 100+ patients and deliver food to 300+ patients. I’ve never felt so great and excited in my life. I’m definitely coming back again to help out.

Truth About Medical Care Brought to Light

Remote Area Medical was a powerful movie bringing to light those who have been left behind due to not being able to afford medical care. It is an issue that is not usually brought into light like this documentary accomplished. It was not only visually striking but it was emotionally striking. The fact that the director chose to follow only a couple stories and families closely really aided to the emotional response of the audience. 

I also enjoyed the background story and highlighting the one man that was in charge of creating this whole event, and why it is still continuing today. It was one man's vision that ends up helping thousands of people with every free clinic they host. 

This documentary really showed the potential of human beings. To help one another just for the pure joy of doing good, no monetary value added. It was powerful when the documentary added a look into the volunteers and how helping these people effected them. There was a female dentist that added how her everyday life was never this rewarding, with people crying tears of joy after almost every procedure she did.

Remote Area Medical brought to light the strugles of Americans who don't have acccess to healthcare or medicine. Althoguh this was not a "political" documentary, you can't help but wonder about the governments involvement with the nations healthcare systems, including a future involving Obamacare. Thousands of locals have gone years, even decades without even having a teeth cleaning, eyes exam, mamogram, ANYTHING! This documentary shows us the issues that many americans are going through and how a small group of volunteers makes a signficant impact on a person by providing free health, dental, and vision exams and treamtent.
