+ if you started dating rin since season 1 ok you're in for a ride. if you've seen the whole thing, he's basically struck with a big inferiority complex and friendship trouble, he clearly can't forget that experience he had with haru and he so clearly wants it again, he just doesn't believe it's doable.

+ despite being so harsh with everyone else DID YOU SEE THE WAY HE TREATED NITORI he'd be softer with you for sure. i think he's mildly(?) aware that has the tendency to lash out whenever he's not in the mood and he's also aware that you're still sticking with him despite that

+ sometimes you'd scold him for being so harsh on nitori and he'd brush you off talking about how it's normal for guys to do that to their kouhais, but whenever you see how upset nitori looks, you just can't keep it in. he'll eventually be like "ok! ok! i get it already!" and you know he means well, but it might irk you too

+ but despite this, he'll come out of his samezuka room a couple times to go out with you in the town. get food or sit at the park for a couple hours talking about things that's been going in your lives. it's the quiet and nostalgic things that he treasures more rather than the huge adventurous dates

+ 1000% there is an argument in this season. sorry, i definitely see an argument happening nearer to the end, especially when he gets kicked off the relay. when nitori can't persuade him, he'll come running to you asking you to knock some sense into his brain, which you try, but i think rin might shout some hurtful words that he doesn't really mean but blurts in the moment. when he sees the shock on your face and the sight of your back growing smaller as you walk away, it'll hit him even more and he might just get more depressed and angrier

+ he'd apologise after his relay with haru, makoto and nagisa. there's no time before and even if he wants to, he can't throw both things away at once. once he's finished having that emotional closure, it'll hit him like a brick and he'd run to find you. no matter where you are, he'd find you and hold you so close that you feel like you're about to break. he'd probably cry and apologise over and over about how he was so stupid and that he should've never yelled at you. you're too important to him and that he should've thought about what he was going to say before letting it out

+ he makes a promise to you there and then that he'll always protect you from others and the bad side of himself. he'll work hard to never show that side to you again and once you tell him it's ok, he will cry. he will hug you like you're dying because he was so scared that you'd give up on him because of that. he realises there and then how special you are and how strong you are for putting up with an ass like him. that's when it hits him again like "damn, i really scored"

+ yay! he's grown nicer!

+ now that he's a third year and captain of the samezuka swim team, he has more pressure than he did a year ago and since you're there all the time, you do your best to support him.

+ so, you visit him a lot in the samezuka dorms and let me tell you, it's tiring but really fun. you have momo, nitori and sousuke to keep you entertained, especially the youngest mikoshiba who i bet interrogates you for advice about getting together with gou. he'd be like "(NAME)-SAN, HOW DID YOU DO IT? IF YOU MANAGED TO TAME RIN-SENPAI, I CAN DO IT TOO!" then rin might beat him up idk

+ momo will also try to get you into beetles. if you already like them, rin will be upset IN THE SENSE that momo beat him to it - not that he'd ever get into it in the first place. if you don't like beetles, rin will make sure that you never touch those damn books that momo carries everywhere. there's a drama cd where momo and nitori chase after pyunsuke because he escaped, if rin even so much as hears that pyunsuke got close to you, he will genuinely be the cause of momo's downfall

+ anyway, i feel like this is the season where you and rin truly get to know each other. sure, you were still a thing in season 1, but you didn't have much time because he was so focused on fixing his issues with his teammates. now that you actually have the time, he makes sure that it happens and that it's perfect.

+ he'll probably start with going out with you as much as he can. now that his duties align with being captain and looking over training schedules, he might cancel a few times and he will feel rotten about it, but sometimes, those decisions are crucial to him. he just trusts that you'll understand the situation :( but if it ever gets too much and you tell him, he'll be a bit like ? at the start, but he'll grow to realise that he really has been an ass

+ when he's also upset with sousuke's injury, he'll tell you about it because he doesn't know what to do about it. he's clearly conflicted about what to do because he knows sousuke wants to swim but he physically can't. you'd be there to hold him and he'd find his peace there and then with you

+ since he's a lot closer with the iwatobi guys too, you guys all tend to hang out with each other. nagisa for sure has a nickname for you too and rei bombards you with random questions. makoto is always sweet and haru's just there acknowledging you. all in all, life is great!

+ lol that extra frfr episode where rin is dressed as a butler, YOU WERE THERE WHEN HE HAD TO BE A MAID LAST YEAR, you're 100% there to support him as a butler this time and he appreciates it(?) momo, on the other hand, is so embarrassed that you have to see him this way. nitori's just cute as always

[ take your marks / dive to the future ]

+ bru his momma and sister loves you like has that not already been established? gou thinks of you like her family already and mrs matsuoka, the one and only, is already so excited for your future. will tease about grandchildren, but she won't prod!

+ since he trains in sydney, this is where things might get a bit difficult, but that's ok! i, as the author, have created two options.

+ option a) you do not live in sydney with him, therefore, you are long-distancing. this might break him apart little by little i bet because although this time, he's not alone since he's made new friends in sydney AND he's got russell and lori somewhere nearby, none of that is shared with you.

+ will try to call you every day. sometimes, if he's too exhausted or if you're too exhausted, you might understand each other's circumstances, but if this happens too often he might get a bit upset. he's already alone in the apartment, so his thoughts might get to him. you've already seen what he's like when he was in high school second year

+ since you live near his family's house, if you go visit him mom and sister on a regularly basis, he'll be so grateful and might cry because he feels sorry that he can't do it himself. just knowing that you have a good relationship with the two other people he cherishes so much makes his heart swell

+ will definitely try to plan things like you coming to visit him or vice versa. it might be difficult and he'll be impatient with it, but that will get him nowhere! when it works he will actually be all over you, taking you to his favourite places, meeting russell and lori and begging you not to go back, but he'll suck it back up in the end and impatiently wait for your next trip to australia

+ option b) you live in sydney with him! 100% he'd suggest moving in together because why not? he'd support whatever you do in australia be it working or attending university, as long as you're both together, he literally feels like he can take on the world

+ on the days your schedule aligns, you'll walk over to where he trains and wait or he'll finish early and come pick you up at work or university, then the two of you would get dinner together. NOW since this is the season where natsuya appears, natsuya would just invite himself to dinner LOL and prod you about why you're dating a loser like rin. it's fun making fun of rin really

+ HAS HE GOT DOWN ON ONE KNEE YET?? probably not, he probably wants a private proposal to be honest. if he DOES plan on doing so i bet he'll ask sousuke for advice even though bro doesn't even have anyone himself. bro will probably just say something like "you'll know." like ok thanks bro

+ if you guys haven't seen the movie and don't mind spoilers, haru basically goes through this big crisis where he's immensely overwhelmed by albert, the swedish swimmer who's a literal beast in the water. he pushed rin away at the end of the movie in road to the world 1, so there was a big issue there and you picked up on that when rin started acting distanced

+ throughout the years, i doubt rin changes when it comes to laying out his problems to you, but it's not because he doesn't trust you, i think it's because he's had his responsibilities as a captain and older brother / eldest son that he feels obliged to keep it in.

+ but despite that, i think your relationship with rin during this season would be rock solid in that you guys trust each other so much that you could go on a spontaneous trip to spain and he'll be like "ok, there must be a reason."

+ rin would probably dedicate a lot of his awards to you. he might not mention your name unless you're comfortable with it. if you're in the stands watching him receive his medal, he'll definitely search for you and hold the medal out to you. if you're not in the stands, he'll stare right into the camera and be like "this is for you, you know it"

+ will of course be ok with you wearing his medal. he'll even put it on you or make a big show as if you competed and won it. he'll get embarrassed and tell you to stop if you shower him with praise and how he did so good in the race, but he's secretly enjoying that shit. keep doing it he'll start crying again

when haru tells makoto that he thinks he has feelings for you, makoto goes, ". . . eh?" because that's not what he expected when he got a phone call two hours ago. he did not walk all the way to haru's apartment just for his friend to start venting about relationship problems, which makoto has also never had, but if it's to help haru out then . . . ?

+ neither of them have a clue what to do really. they're on the floor in haru's room, pondering about what sort of confessions are suitable or even capable for someone like haru. makoto asks what kind of stuff you like and haru just pauses. it’s not because he doesn’t know but because he doesn’t think it’s necessary to have excessive knowledge of all your likes and dislikes.

+ “i think (name) likes me,” he says and makoto just chuckles. “we can’t be completely sure of that, haru, but i hope so.”

+ makoto then contemplates calling rin since he might have better experience, but haru would honestly rather die than call rin for advice, but then he also thinks he's about to die if he doesn't tell you within the week. it’s a gamble that he’s half-willing to take

+ so the two of them are hunched over haru's phone, dialling rin who's an hour ahead in sydney. it's 9pm, so when rin picks up with a grumble and haru gets straight to the point, "i like (name). what do i do?", there's a long hesitation. no one speaks for a good minute, so haru's ready to hang up and mentally check-off rin as one of the worst helpers in the world until his voice booms through the line, demanding if this is a prank call or not.

+ "wait, haru likes (name)?" he repeats, voice cracking because he's genuinely so surprised. you can tell by the strain in his tone that he was exhausted for the day. "wait, wait, haru likes someone?" makoto's like "yeah."

+ so what started off with one clueless man became two and now three with the addition of matsuoka rin, who also has no experience in this field, but he's the only one with a good logical sense.

+ "ok, well, why?" he asks and haru replies, "i don't have a specific reason. i like her for her." and honestly, makoto finds this quite sweet, whereas rin sighs. "i get that, but you're gonna have to think of a more romantic reason if you're going to say it in person. wait, you are planning on saying this in person, right?!"

+ haru stares at makoto rather blankly. what, is a phone call a bad idea?

+ "haru," rin starts, "don't be a loser. you should contact her to meet you, i don't know, tonight or tomorrow, whenever you were planning on doing it."

+ but what does he actually say? how he goes silent when he sees you smile, laughing as you chat to someone else that’s not him? how he wishes that every joke and compliment that comes out your mouth is only ever for him? how he wants to get over this giddy phase that’s been bothering him, tell you as soon as he can and finally call him yours? would you allow all that?

+ it’s when makoto leaves that haru finally musters up the courage to call you. he’s normally never nervous, he doesn’t know what it’s like to actually feel for someone since all he’s ever liked is water. would you give him a chance? would he be able to make you happy?

+ the phone starts ringing before he knows it, and he realises that he'd accidentally pressed your number. it’s going forward now, there's no do-overs. if he hangs up, you’ll get a missed called notification and most definitely call him back. he's going to do this.

+ you pick up, “haru? unusual of you to call me first! what’s up?” and as soon as he hears your voice, nerves rattle through his ribs and he feels like a lovestruck high school boy again. his feelings for you aren’t new, it’s always been there. “yeah, i’m fine. um, what are you doing right now?”

+ “right now? i was just sitting at home, why?” and haru realises that there’s no better chance than now. he’s going to do this today. “you free at the moment? can you meet me at the park next to the iwatobi sc?”

+ he hears you scampering around, waiting as the line becomes a little muffled. you speak up again, “now? i mean, ok, i'll just get my keys and see you in like 20 minutes?" the same park we went to yesterday, right?”"

+ "yeah, see you."

+ what feels like a second to haru becomes reality when he spots the girl who's constantly occupying his thoughts. you're perched on a swing in your pyjama bottoms, a big coat and comfy shoes, gazing at the sky. you've never looked more beautiful, haru thinks as he continues walking towards you. he always thought that even sunlight on water couldn't hold a candle to you, but when he saw you again after a few months of being in tokyo, he just knew that he couldn't let you go.

+ you spot him shuffling over and hold up your hand with a smile. "hey, you. you're late." and he fails to suppress a chuckle as he sits on the swing next to you. he replies, "by a minute."

+ you laugh, digging your hands in your pockets before looking back up at the sky again. "so, tell me why you called me out in this weather, at this hour," and immediately, haru recalls his conversation with makoto and rin, scrambling to write a quick mental script in his mind before he something he might regret shoots out his mouth. he can't screw this up. he's here now.

+ "haru?" you call, turning to face him. "hey, you've been─"

+ "i like you."

+ you blink. you need to hear that again. surely, you misheard that. "haru─"

+ "i like you, (name)."

+ and now, you know. it's true. he's true. your worries that haru would never reciprocate your feelings because you'd be too much on top of his swimming career. your devastation when you couldn't rush to tokyo when ikuya contacted you that haru had fainted because he was swimming so carelessly. your worries that everything you felt was just an idea rather than hope.

+ haru gazes into your eyes with such intensity that you feel like you're looking at a completely different person. is this what he's like before a race? before he dives into the water? or is this just for you?

+ there's nothing from either of you for a moment. haru's deep blue eyes secured on your features as if he's holding you upright just from his gaze. your mouth forms shapes, but there's no noise accompanying it. your fingers are curled up in your pockets, you feel cold yet hot at the same time as though a burst of fire rushed through the chill that your body had grown accustomed to from being outside. you feel like you don't need your coat anymore, but at the same time, you want to keep it on to trap the heat about to flood out of you.

+ finally, haru speaks first. his eyes flit towards the ground before locking onto yours again. "you don't have to say anything, just, i like you, (name). i have for a while."

+ he tries to make it subtle, but you've been studying him so closely for years now that the slight crease in his brows and twitch of his lips is so obvious to you. when you don't answer, the hope that he's talked himself into starts cracking into small pieces and you see his knuckles tense up. he contemplates whether to stay or go.

+ "sorry. for this and for calling you out so late."

+ and he stands up, brain fogged with something he can't understand even more. he's about to leave when you shoot up and grab his wrist, twisting him around and pulling him towards you so that he collides into you. his other hand instinctively wraps around your waist, steadying you ever so gently. he widens his eyes at you.

+ "haru, you─", you begin, resting your head on his chest. you feel the thrum of his heartbeat. is it quickening a little? or are you just imagining things? "really?"

+ "mm," haru confirms. he reaches up to touch your elbows, silently urging you to lift your head. "i like you."

+ and it feels like you're floating, or it feels like your body's drilled into the ground but your head is as light as a feather. you feel excited, nervous, scared. haru's right here in front of you, sharing his most sincere thoughts and it's real. it's really real.

+ "haru . . ." you say quietly. "i like you too. a lot."

+ suddenly, the hum of the night disappears. the iwatobi sc ceases to exist. he's not standing in the park anymore. the only thing he can see and feel is you, your body leaning against his, the ghostly touches of your fingers moving around his wrist, your feet shifting in the grass, your short breaths as you ready yourself to look him in the eye. it's all he can sense, it's all he's here for. it's this moment.

+ "(name)," he says your name so delicately like it's a rare flower, like if he says it again, you'll disappear. he curls his hands around your arms, taking them in his grasp as he steps back. "(name), look at me."

+ it's hard, it's sort of embarrassing, but you do. you raise your head and come face to face with ocean blue eyes, soft dark hair and a gentle gaze. was haru always this . . . pretty? handsome? you've never felt so vulnerable and neither has he, but did he always make you feel this way?

+ "i like you, (name)," he repeats, but he's much closer now, his nose is practically touching yours and you can feel his breath tickle your lips. his grip on your arms are now on your waist, not too tight but not too loose. he leans forward so that your foreheads rest against each other. "i'm happy."

+ definitely calls makoto as soon as he gets home. makoto asks, "ok?! ok?! so?! so?! how'd it go? does she like you back? what did you say? how did you say it?" and haru's calm. "i said i like her. she likes me back." of course, he leaves all the details out, so makoto just imagines a blank-faced haru repeating 'i like you, i like you' as though it's a mantra, so he doesn't really know how to take this.

+ just in general, i think he'd be so excited to introduce you to them. obviously they're not blood-related, but they still mean so much to him and i'm sure that they'd support him in whatever he does, but let's say they didn't really approve of his partner because a) you're a piece of shit or b) you ate their dog or something idk, he'd be heartbroken for sure, but don't worry, they love you :D

+ as you're walking to their house together you'd be like, "impress australian mama and papa on the go" and then he'd for sure look at you with this 'you did not just say that' look, but then do that shit where he chuckles while shaking his head why tf am i being so specific

+ let's hope you're good with dogs because as soon as rin rings that doorbell, winnie is gonna start barking like there's no tomorrow. if you're cool with them, winnie will 100% lick you up like she's claiming you as part of her territory, but if you're not good with dogs i feel like rin would let russell and lori know beforehand. they'd 100% understand but poor winnie might be locked in another room during dinner LOL

+ i obviously can't predict the personality of every reader, but no matter how different, lori would be saying yes to the wedding invitation before it's even thought about. woman has her outfit picked out already. she loves you and you can tell by the way she won't stop talking to you or asking questions about either yourself or the relationship. maybe she'll ask so much that russell will be like "ok, i think it's time to calm down now, hun"

+ russell . . . well his personality isn't exactly detailed in the anime, but i think he's such a chill dad, like he doesn't have kids, but i feel like he'd so be a girl dad. rin's dating a biker? ok. rin's dating the most unathletic, swimming-hater, water repellent and gymphobic person ever? strange, but he'll take it. just don't hurt him lol

+ it's like they've laid out a red carpet at the doorway, not for rin lol, BUT FOR YOU!! their most esteemed and welcomed guest. lori claims to have been waiting for this moment since rin lived with them. she'd probably fuss about how their house is too small for such a wonderful person like you, but then rin would be like "lori, it's ok, we're not like that" but she's just so sweet, she'd always say "we don't want your feet to get cold! wear these slippers!" or "if you're feeling cold, let me know! i'll amp up the heating until we're sweating!"

+ dinner would be so extravagant. not saying that haru's unimportant, but lori might put more effort into this meal, but this is only because it's you, you're clearly not just a friend. rin's brought his entire ass soulmate, how is she not gonna go all-out. she's gonna have messaged rin before your flight asking for every single detail about your dietary requirements, your allergies, what you like or don't like and if you're the type to be like "oh no, it's really ok! i'm good with anything!" she'd tell you that you're spitting absolute nonsense and that it's a privilege for her to be able to do this for her host-son

+ since russell and lori are a married couple, they've been through the whole oooh butterflies in the tummy, omggg my one and only yayyy and he's the only for meee shit, but let's be real i don't think rin's the type to really express that in words. he'd most definitely say at least one sappy thing during dinner like "yeah, my motivation for swimming has definitely gone up" or "i still can't believe i'm so lucky" which might make you go :( IN A GOOD WAY, but he wouldn't gonna go full on sob story because he's got his pride on the line. and bro cries a lot too, he cannot make himself cry in front of his host-parents

+ don't be too alarmed when you feel rin's eyes on you all the time. whether you're speaking to him or russell or lori, he is going to be staring at you all the mf time to the point where russell will point it out and go "rin, you're gonna shoot lasers at this point!" and bro has to snap out of it

+ oh i feel like he'd be the type to pile up your plate too. his favourite food is steak, so i'm sure lori must have whipped something up. if you like steak, he's going to give you more steak than he eats himself, he's going to give you the best parts and even if you insist that he should have them he's gonna say that he's ok and that he's happy when you eat. if you don't like steak, he'll probably offer it once just because it's so good, but if not, pile it up with something else

+ lori will see this and i bet she'll be like "aw, look at our rin being so sweet! always the sharer!" and rin's like "stop it, lori"

+ lowk think that lori will do more speaking while russell just listens. not because he's disinterested but just personality-wise, he seems more quiet than his wife. she obviously has that motherly tendency so she might be like "rin, you did a very good job, you got incredibly blessed and you must MUST treat each other with the same amount of love and respect" while russell is the 'yes, yes, i agree, what she said' kind of man

+ if you're the type to say "i'm really grateful and lucky to have met rin" lori's definitely gonna be like, "ohh i think we all know that he's lucky to meet you" then everyone laughs, russell will probably back her up with "rin probably had to beg!"

+ the entirety of dinner would just be russell and lori making fun of rin. russell will surely be like "so, mate, got your wedding date booked yet?" before saying, "our boy rin's going to be crying when he reads his vows!" then lori might join in on the fun and say "i'll be there to record everything!"

+ russell and lori would do everything they could to accommodate for the two of you. rin would appreciate this so so much because it's literally his two worlds talking together. he'd be so happy throughout the entire evening that you, his most prized possession, is having fun chatting with the couple that basically raised him almost a quarter of his life. he knows what he should be grateful for and how important this is to remember

+ i'm sure russell and lori would insist that you stay the night because no way they're making you spend your night in an ass hotel. they'd send rin away lol but not you

+ 100% rin's going to be a bit emotional and clingy during the night. he's going to keep talking about how he's so thankful that you're in his life and that you got the courage to meet them because it's really not an easy thing to do. he's gonna hold you tight and whisper things how he really loves you and how he really wants what russell said about the wedding come true - if you'll allow it, of course. YOU WILL RIGHT???

+ summer in japan, a torturous season. breeze? gone. sweat? a waterfall down your neck. you can't go anywhere without air conditioning because god forbid you want to grab a a small snack from the convenience store without becoming sticky from the humidity.

+ you sit in the car with the doors closed, seat slightly leaned back and ac on full blast. you genuinely can't bring yourself to turn it off because you fear what you will become in this devastating heat.

+ right now, rin's in a meeting with mikhail. they're both in japan due to the upcoming tournament, so they're inside the pool centre doing some last minute training.

+ you offered to pick him up, rin refused, of course, but you're deathly insistent, so he ended up saying yes after you asked, like, twice.

+ you close your eyes but they shoot open a second later when you hear the click of the car door followed by a groan of relief.

+ "it's so hot," rin complains, flapping the front of his shirt as he presses his head against the headrest. "i'm dying."

+ you wait until he closes the door. "well, stop dying because your sister promised me food today," you say, propping yourself back up. you pull the seat forward from its position and quickly put your hands on the wheel. "she won't let me in if i don't bring you home."

+ "nah, she'll let you in and close the door on me."

+ you pause. "on second thought, yeah."

+ before you can turn the car on, rin reaches out and very tenderly brushes the strands of hair away from your forehead. "you look hot."

+ "no, idiot," he chuckles. his hands rest on your shoulder. "you look like you've been sweating for days. turn the ac up."

+ you roll your eyes, but a smile flickers on your lips. "oh, shut up, you just came back from swimming, i've been outside this whole time."

+ he laughs lightly again before his expression shifts into something a little more serious. "you ok with driving? you don't think it'll strain your back or anything?"

+ the car hums to life and you start reversing from your parking spot. "too late now, but i should be fine, it's only a short drive."

+ rin creases his brows. he doesn't look too convinced, but he leans back against his seat. "alright, if you say so. i can always drive."

+ it is a short drive from the pool to rin's house. on the days he has training, you have a routine where you drop him off before heading to work and luckily, your shift tends to end around the time rin finishes, so it all works out.

+ you work as the assistant manager of a sports retail store in the middle of the town. it's a pretty popular store since you sell all the main brands that people are dying to get their hands on. today was stock-refilling day too, so it was an absolute mess. your colleagues were running around like headless chickens and you yourself were on the brink of collapsing with how painful everything was─mentally and physically.

+ it's a comfortable silence in the car. rin likes to hear about your day and you love hearing about mikhail's japanese mistakes, but there are times when you notice that rin wants his quiet time. judging by the way he looks outside the window, today might be one of those days.

+ you turn on your blinker and as you're about to enter a roundabout, a black van suddenly barges through like its got furious business to attend to, forcing you to stamp on the brakes as hard as you can before you get crushed. you jolt forward, but rin's quicker, his arm shoots across so that you don't collide nose-first with the wheel.

+ "what the hell?!" he growls, glaring at the van that's already zoomed away into the third exit. "dumb shit could've hit us!" the driver next to you seems to think the same thing as he starts spitting curses you've never heard before.

+ eyes wide, he puts his hand to your cheeks with the back of his fingers as if he's checking your temperature. "are you ok?! you didn't get hurt, did you?!"

+ you nod slowly, regaining your senses. thank god that your driving instructor drilled emergency brakes into your lessons. "i'm ok, it was just a bit of a shock."

+ "he was a piece of shit," rin hisses, looking back out at the roundabout. "we gotta move, go after that red car."

+ finally, you blend into the rhythm of a peaceful drive and before you know it, you find yourself forgetting whatever just happened. you stifle a laugh rin continues spouting threat after threat─that if he was driving, who knows what he would've done or said to the careless driver.

+ "i'd chase after him and stare into his rear mirror to flip him off, make him piss himself" he says and you snort.

+ "what a great way to end my day," you joke, throwing one hand up in the air before it lands back down on the wheel with a thump. "now i've dealt with two angry men today."

+ rin raises a brow. "two?"

+ you grumble under your breath as you think back to it. "this one guy, around our age? i don't know, he could've been a bit older. he yelled at one of my colleagues because we didn't have a specific size in stock. bear in mind that it's a really popular brand and it's so high in demand these days."

+ "must be because of the bunch of summer games going on right now," rin says. "did you do something? you did, right?"

+ you nod. "yeah, my manager was off today because she's ill, but i went over and explained that it's sold out but that we're having a restock in the afternoon, so it should be here tomorrow."

+ "yeah."

+ "but he was like, 'i need it now! bring it to me now!' and seriously, you should've seen the look on my face. i was ready to kill a man."

+ you hear him chuckle as you turn right. "yeah, i know exactly what that look is."

+ "hey, now, i don't look at you like i'm about to kill you," you say and he laughs again.

+ "yeah, you do," he pulls himself up higher in his seat, "but seriously, you should be careful with working there. it's a sports store and i know how heavy things can be."

+ "hey, hey," you tut, shooting him a playful glare, "i'm not a damsel in distress."

+ "yeah, not to anyone, but you're my damsel in distress, stupid," he grins, giving you a small poke. "i don't want you pulling anything. getting hurt isn't a joke."

+ "ok, mr swimmer."

+ "i'm serious, (name). i've seen it happen to so many times, i've seen it become a permanent thing before. i really don't want that happening to you."

+ "i know, i know and i appreciate you looking out for me," you hum. you reach out and place a hand on his knee. "if it makes you feel any better, i'm not doing anything that requires heavy lifting. i leave that to the others, i do most of the talking and customer service things."

+ "yeah, yeah, i know, i trust you. just don't do anything that's too much for your body."

+ he lifts your hand and kisses your knuckles before chucking your arm back to you like it's a toy. "can't have my beautiful taxi driver ditching me."

+ you huff. "you wet rat of a passenger─"

+ you swat at his face, but he grabs your wrist. "hey, eyes on the road, mrs."

+ you can't dismiss the tiny flip your stomach does when he calls you that. 'mrs'. it's a small nickname he started calling you ever since he returned from sydney─and boy, the things it does to you when he says that looking straight into your eyes.

+ it reminds you of the one time when rin had accidentally called you 'mrs' in front of gou, and gou, you love her to bits. she was silent, but as soon as rin left the room, she took your hands in hers and held her breath until her cheeks looked ready to burst before she exploded with a, 'please! let me be your maid of honour!'

+ "what if i don't want to become your mrs?" you say, glancing sideways to check his reaction. his eyes twitch and you know your words caught a nerve.

+ "hah?" he says it like a challenge and you can't help but want to provoke him even more.

+ "what if . . . you," you begin, biting your lip to suppress the laughter threatening to leave your mouth, "become my mrs."

+ and the look on his face is fine art, like the ones you spend hours queueing for at galleries. you can't help it, but you crack up, your voice filling the car to the brim.

+ "what?!" he exclaims, his eyebrows making a zig zag as he tries to comprehend what the hell you just suggested. "what are you saying?!"

+ "i think you being mrs (l/n) has a wonderful ring to it," you chortle, but rin snorts as if what you said is the most absurd thing in the world. "right?"

+ "'right?' my ass," he says and runs a hand through his hair. with a smile, he leans over and lets his finger gently swipe at the top of your cheek. "just shut up and get us home."

if it wasn’t for nitori aiichiro, rin’s overwhelming kouhai yet biggest supporter in every life aspect you could think of, rin believed that he could’ve escaped. he had successfully managed to swerve around captain mikoshiba and run into his room, shutting the door before he could be found. no way was he going to participate in that.

well, he was half-successful as he failed to realise nitori’s presence in the room. it didn’t take long for the second round of this escape trial to commence as he now tried to peel the grip of his underclassmen’s surprisingly heavy fingers off his leg.

“nitori—” rin seethed, one of his hands clutched around his roommate’s poor head, “let go of me before i break your skull!”

“matsuoka-senpai, please! it’s the swim team’s tradition that we host a maid cafe every year for the festival!” nitori cried as he locked his arms around rin’s thigh like an animal trap. “you’ll be forced to quit if you don’t participate!”

“then i quit!”

“no! you can’t! i won’t let you!”

“i swear—”

shaking under rin’s iron-hold, nitori winced as he looked up at him. “you’re aiming for the olympics! you can’t quit now! you’re not really thinking of throwing all that away just because of this, right?”

at that, rin paused. his eyebrows twitched as his brain racked through thoughts of what to do or say, not forgetting that nitori was still latched onto him. yes, he had high hopes for the olympics and no, samezuka’s stupid event was definitely not important enough for him to even consider giving that up, but what he did care and had a good amount of respect for was his name and dignity.

and there was only one person he could think of who he would never, never ever show the downfall of his status to.

he was doomed if she was to show up.

“senpai! please! just for the morning!”

eyes flaming red, rin shot a glance down at nitori, whose head was practically mushed into his leg. possibly dented from his iron-claw too.

“… just the morning, then,” rin grumbled, his voice so low that nitori had to hesitate, re-rendering his answer.

“really?! you will?! you’re not quitting? you’re going—”

“shut up already!”

the classroom was laid out with six tables, each big enough to seat at least four people at a time. they had a white tablecloth neatly adorned with black and red petals, signifying samezuka’s traditional colours. perhaps, if this wasn’t specifically a maid-cafe, it would’ve been a decent venue for a light snack bar.

the aroma of toasted waffles and freshly-cooked omurice was also pleasantly filling. everything and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

with the exception of matsuoka rin, who was busy moping in the corner like a dog who hadn’t been fed yet.

“senpai!” nitori chirped, reaching out to adjust the white frill of rin’s apron. “keep your chin up! you can serve the next set of customers!”

“shut up, nitori,” rin sulked, slapping his hand away and roughly pulling the frill on his own. “it’ll be better if i didn’t serve at all.”

“don’t be like that, senpai!” beaming, nitori leaned forward to meet rin’s eye, who was excessively making it obvious that any other comment would result in an instantaneous death. “besides! i have news for you!”

rin sighed, hanging his head in shame. “if it’s not me being allowed to leave, nothing’s news.”

as a new group of girls from a neighbouring school that rin vaguely recognised entered the room, he crouched, resting his hands on his knees. this was truly mortifying.

nitori let out a nervous laugh. “senpai, i want to leave too, you’re not alone on that, but this one’s good news!”

“… what.”

“i messaged (name)-san to come visit you! i thought you might appreciate the support! she said she’s on her way right now!”

at this point, it was a genuine miracle that nitori aiichiro had both eyes, or even half a nose as rin’s muscles were bulging, fully ready to sock the 16 years of life out of him.

and apparently, nitori noticed the complete 180 reaction that he hadn’t predicted as sweat started flooding out every pore in his body just by looking at rin’s hulk state.

“wait!” nitori stammered. “i promise i had good intentions!”

“you’ll be lucky to go home tonight instead of waking up in a ditch—” rin began, words practically inaudible as his teeth gnashed together like a hunting predator, until a voice that he recognised in a heartbeat rang from the doorway.

“rin!”

he had never wanted to be so wrong in his life.

footsteps began makings its way towards the almost-brawl-engaged pair before it stopped just near them. from the corner of his eye, rin regrettably knew exactly who it was just from the type of shoes.

seizing the moment before his life would be taken away from him, nitori jumped away from rin and bowed before you, his head almost colliding with the floor.

“(name)-san! you came!” he cheered. “thank you very much!”

you smiled and pat his head. “hey, ai! of course i did! it’s your big festival and i wanted to see how pretty you look in a dress!”

feeling braver now that you were there, ai shook his head fervently. “i appreciate it, but no, no! there’s someone even more beautiful right next to me!”

fully aware that he was gawking at you in shock, you took a step back to get a good view of matsuoka rin, your very tough and manly boyfriend donned in a beautifully sewn maid outfit from head to toe. by force or choice, his hair was brushed so that it appeared silkier than what you remembered it to be.

“nice outfit you got there, matsuoka,” you snickered, eyeing the white headband down to the knee-high socks. you shot him a playful grin, raising your brows too when you noticed his eye twitch violently. “you guys don’t possibly charge extra for a picture too, do you?”

mouth wide like a man who’d just witnessed God’s miracle for the first time, rin slapped a hand to his face, his expression haunted with the sight of seeing his girl of two years and three months standing just a hair’s width away, watching the beginning of his demise. it was one thing being embarrassed in front of her, but presenting himself in a frilly and unbelievably childish black and white dress was more than agonising.

“(name)… why did you come here?” rin said, voice muffled by his hand. “why did you even reply to nitori’s message?”

you laughed, which would’ve normally made rin’s heart tingle, but clearly not now. “how can i miss this? it’s a precious opportunity and i have ai to thank for!”

“you… i don’t even… this is the last thing you need to see!”

whipping out your phone from your pocket, you angled it so that the camera was perfectly focused on rin. “this is everything. now, move your hand, my camera’s about to eat this shit up.”

upon hearing the word ‘camera’, rin had never moved so fast in his days of swimming. he snatched your phone and grabbed your shoulders, pulling you towards him so suddenly that you crashed against his chest.

“absolutely no pictures!” rin yelled, clamping one large hand over both your wrists and using the other to delete whatever you managed to take.

“stop! i’ll keep it to myself!” you yelled back, yanking away from him. “just one! i won’t even show gou!”

“show gou and i’ll finish you!”

“rin!” you waved your foot in nitori’s direction. “ai! get my phone for me!”

nitori chuckled uneasily. “uhm… that is…”

“if you even so much as move, i will kill you, nitori,” threatened rin, his face morphed into murderous intent. his thumb hovered over your phone screen as he was faced with the horror of your password. “damnit, what’s your code?”

“hah! no way you’ll guess it! give it to me!” you took a fistful of rin’s dress in your hands and tugged with all your might. “rin! i’ll take a nice good picture, one that even you’ll like!”

“i said no pictures!”

and again, if rin was able to dunk his head under sand like ostriches did, he would’ve done it in seconds had he heard another familiar voice from the door.

“onii-chan…? what… are you wearing?”

you grinned like a cheshire-cat. “gou! i love you! rin! picture! now! take a picture for me!”

“gou!” rin shouted, shoving your phone into his pocket and pressing you close to him despite your struggles. “give me 10 minutes! i’m getting you and (name) out of here!”
