My Body My Space Festival

The My Body My Space (MBMS) Rural Arts and Culture Festival’s Central Nervous System Programme (CNS), from 17th – 19th February, will feature visual arts, music and land-art alongside an exceptional mix of local, national and international dance works. The CNS Programme is set to wind its way across the dusty roads and rolling hills of Emakhazeni, connecting a range of rural sites and well-known landmarks through a unique fare of arts experiences.

The People’s Theatre

The Peoples Theatre has been in existence for 25 years, bringing quality, fun-filled, quality theatre to children and families.

The Peoples Theatre is situated in the Joburg Theatre Complex and is a purposely created Children’s Theatre. The theatre stages over 8 productions each year. Many of these productions are used to bring a book to life on stage through elaborate sets, costumes, good sounds, lighting and professional actors.

This year The Peoples Theatre presents: Winnie the Pooh, Cinderella, Storybook Theatre and sees the return of Shrek The Musical at the end of the year.

Great Moscow Circus

The Great Moscow Circus is in town, at Montecasino until the end of January 2017. The circus moves on to Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth after they complete their run in Johannesburg.

Renos took the opportunity to interview Andrew Guild of the Great Moscow Circus.

Andrew Guild has toured more than 7’000 performers in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom. He uses this experience to find the very best acts to star in the Great Moscow Circus.

Dimitri Martinis visited the newly built Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. He had the privilege to meet and interview Gabriella Triantafyllis, the Centre’s Programming and Production Manager. In this interview she describes the establishment of the centre which will soon be housing the Greek National Opera as well as the National Library.

Tima Reece release “9”, a nine track album, following a 9 year hiatus.

After a 9 year hiatus, the sultry songstress is back with a bang. Tima Reece released her comeback album ‘9’ on 2 December 2016.

Tima, along with her team, have been hard at work in studio over the past few months fine-tuning an album that she is proud of.

“9” is a fusion of R&B, Soul, Pop and Trap with the nine-track album exploring relationship dynamics including love, loss and most importantly, the resurrection of hope.

Vuyani’s Lulu Mlangeni flies SA flag high at US Dance Fest

Signatures is the theme for this year’s Vuyani Week programme at The Market Theatre which will showcase the artistic signatures of seasoned dancers and their outreach protégés.

Artists with distinct personal creative signatures will reimagine historical works to be performed by a new generation of dancers at these family-friendly performances.

In keeping with the SIGNATURES theme, Lulu Mlangeni’s Page 27 will be performed by the trainees, a new cluster of dancers under Vuyani’s in-house training programme. Page 27, which premiered at the Market Theatre last year and has also been performed at the Afrovibes and SANAA arts festivals, interrogates social issues such as gender inequality.

Vuyani Week runs till Sunday 4 December 2016 at the John Kani Theatre at The Market Theatre Complex

Suddenly the Storm

Paul Slabolepszy’s new play set in contemporary South Africa poses the question of whether the wounds of the past can ever really be healed. The play is set in the present day in Joburg’s East Rand at the home of an ageing, former police officer and his much younger wife. Namhla Gumede a former exile from Soweto born on 16 June, 1976 arrives at their home seeking answers to questions that have remained buried for 40 years. What begins as a smouldering dark comedy turns suddenly into a roller-coaster ride of startling revelations, rage and recrimination. Suddenly the Storm runs at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square until 19 November 2016.
