It should have been harder to get from the ground floor to the princess’s room. Noah couldn’t help but be appalled by the lack of security around the entire court. There’d been guards at her door but she’d overheard them discussing a time in the middle of the night to sneak away and drink the leftovers from dinner. When she’d come out, she’d found only the one who had drawn the short straw and he was easy to take out quietly. There were less guards the closer she got to the princess’s room, either that or they didn’t seem to care as much. There was an entire royal court’s worth of werewolves staying there and yet security was loosely assembled at best. Noah shook her head at the thought. She’d always remembered a place where the guards served their leaders with more devotion than that. But perhaps those were different leaders. Noah hadn’t escaped the talk of Theo’s rule. Other families had whispered about what it meant for months and she had tuned in on high alert to each passing conversation.
Two AM was probably too late. There was every possibility the princess was asleep. There was every possibility she would want nothing to do with a human showing up at her door in the middle of the night. But Noah had to assume it was important to both of them. She’d felt Theo’s emotions in her own chest, she’d seen her reaction in court, closer and stronger than ever, enough to make her feel like her chest would swell and snap the dress holding her upright. Thankfully, Noah hadn’t had to keep that dress on. She’d changed back into her own clothes before they insisted on binding her wrists. She wasn’t sure if she should be insulted or pleased that they hand’t considered she’d learned to get out of ropes before she was ten but she’d count it as a win for now. Noah’s mouth was dry by the time she reached the door to the Princess’s room, praying to whatever gods were currently available that this was still the door, that years hadn’t altered the layout. She took one breath, deep into her own gut before she brought her knuckles lightly to the wooden door, turning her body just enough to hide the unconscious guard behind her in case it wasn’t Theodora who answered.
