In hearing John Huntsman's statement for to announce his dropping out of the republican primary race, I could not help but pay attention when he said the words
"I believe it is now time for our party to unite around the candidate best equipped to defeat Barack Obama."
This displeased me. Defeat Barack Obama, defeat him? That is not the point of running for president of the United States of America. One does not do so just to bring down the opposing party. I would like to think that we live in a world where people actually do things for the good of doing them. When a candidate runs for president, I want he or she to do so for the good of the country. You become a candidate because you feel that the country is not being lead in the right direction or is in danger of corruption. You do not run to win like that.
I am not so naive to believe that the candidates running, Republican and Democratic alike, should have a purely "for the good of the people" platform I just wish that they could project ideas and hopes for the country in the forefront of their campaign as opposed to saying aw, look at my opposition, he really sucks.
I know that this uproar from me is merely provoked from incorrect word usage, yet it still rather unsettling.
