The story here is one of simple truth, no matter how well documented a system, no matter how articulate the design, when translated to software there will be gaps, there will be things that behave in ways not initially identified in the volumes of lead up work. Certainly there are ways to mitigate some of these problems, some which may be easy to do, others may be impossible depending on the work environment. 

Here are some things I recommend to improve the outcomes of any software project, from the development perspective. For these I will assume that everyone involved in the process is competent in their roles, and working at the best interest of a successful project. 

Software Engineers should be involved in review of the draft Requirements Documents.

I recommend at least emailing a draft of the requirements to the project lead developer before requirements are finalized. I cannot tell you how many times I have been handed requirements that have miles wide gaps, technically unfeasible or just outright prohibitively expensive to execute requirements. Domain owners for each of the components involved in the puzzle should be engaged to review and critique the initial requirements document, so as to give your BSA’s opportunities to tighten up requirements, advise alternatives early, and setup a firm foundation for design and ultimately deployment of a winning solution.

Give the Software Engineer an understanding of not just how, but why.

Its easy to give a developer a component to build, but not provide them the rationale behind the building of such a structure. Sometimes this happens because the original requirement provider may not know themselves why a particular component should be a certain way, as it may be a long lived business rule that has outlived the career path of the original rule maker. 

These are certainly challenges, but where possible some background should be made available to the lead developer so as they understand the purpose of the system they are seeking to create. Something as simple as a back of the book blurb as to the history of the business rules and why the system is necessary can be the glue that binds together the requirements into a narrative, allows the design to sing with purpose, and allows the engineer to be able to anticipate the gaps between the lines of requirements, and design the system in a way that anticipates possible growth opportunities, making maintenance easier.

This does not absolve the engineer from doing some of the legwork, if a requirement is confusing, the engineer needs to call it out, ask for it to be explained, especially if it appears to inflict additional risk to the system for little to no outcome. The engineer must advocate for his understanding of the system he builds, but it also helps when the designers and analysts are also proactive in helping the engineer learn the business rules and what they stand for.

Software is a team sport.

In closing, effective communication of ideas results in better software. Early collaborative efforts in analysis, review, and design can close gaps, encourage advocacy, and while they cannot entirely eliminate problems in development, they can minimize them. Making them easier to overcome when they are encountered because the entire project team will have a strong understanding. This means they can provide intelligent alternatives to obstacles, will have the tools necessary to articulate those alternatives back to the process owners, and closes the loop ensuring the correct decision is made at the right time.
