Patrick Seymour
Art Director - Advertising- LG2 - Canada
Illustrations, Graphic Design, Typography, Digital Art.
Started to play with Adobe illustrator to become more efficient in his day job. For clients with low budgets that could not hire a professional illustrator or photographer. Enabling him to do ‘anything on the spot’.
‘I am not an illustrator in my day job.’ ‘Right now I do illustration for fun and to relax myself.’ ‘So it’s more of a hobby for me. ‘
‘I always wanted to do woodcut and the work of MC Escher, but my hands are too shaky to accomplish small details.’

My own conversation with Patrick Seymour:
Hi Patrick,
Hope you don't mind the message. I am doing a Masters in Art and Design and currently writing an essay, the essay is based on artists and how they balance different interests and practices.
I have looked and written about a few professional artists, but I also want to talk about someone who isn't an Artist for their job, and do it as a hobby successfully as you do. I wonder if you could tell me a bit about how your Art Director job role works alongside your graphic design, illustration, digital art, masks etc.
How you find balance, and how they relate and how they are different etc. I have already read a few interviews you have done - but I am more looking at how you work with all your different concerns and how you see your art and where is fits in with your life and job.
What made you follow your interests with confidence?
Alice
Hi Alice,
thank you for your message it's really appreciated.
It's true, i'm an art director first here in Montreal at LG2 and i mostly do illustration and graphic design for fun during the night and the week-end. I think for me the balance is that both job are really different and creative in there own way. At work they ask me to be the more creative as i can be for a client and at home 90% of the time it's for myself.
I don't know if i see my illustration as art, for me it's more technical that everything else, i try to have no concept and no main gold. Mainly i do this to kill time haha this is the best way that i find yet. i can draw on Illustrator 5 or 6 hours in a row, probably more and the time just flys faster.
Hope i answer your questions, if you need anything else from me just ask. Thank you again and happy new year.
Patrick.
