hi again, thanks for the resignation advice! to clarify my situation a bit more, i was hired as an independent contractor (even though i had no experience and had to be trained), and my contract stipulates that i have to give at least 6 months' notice...i am hoping to get out sooner, but i think that would really be up to the boss? my supervisor has been great so i can always ask him for a ref, but honestly i just want to get out and go back to school and never work in this industry again.
Okay, so here’s the good and the bad news
Bad–if it’s contractually stipulated, you may be stuck, though depending on how shitty the over-boss is, they may take it as a cue to start looking for someone else and unexpectedly cut you loose before that six months is up but at a time not of your choosing. On the other hand, freedom.
Good. REALLY GOOD. You still have a reference. I don’t know how long you were there, but it’s always good to be able to show you have a reference/character reference from a former supervisor, and the longer you work at a place, the weirder it looks if you don’t have it, so keep. that. supervisor’s. info. I still have to fill in that shit from over 15 years ago for positions now. So keep their name, title, the address of the company, email, and phone #. It will likely come up again. (tangent for new renters out there, this is true for landlords, too. I have a doc with all my landlords’ info back to 1999 and have to present it every time I look for apts.)
I had an illuminating convo with a friend recently bc I’m dragging out telling my dept about my resignation until I have a signed contract for the new position bc I had one fall through once and I’m not doing that again and also bc my chair is vindictive and petty and I want to put this off as long as humanly possible, so I asked if I should email it to her or present the letter in person/hard copy, and her answer was ‘do you respect her? No? Then email.’
It had never occurred to me that that was how the difference would be read, so I’m passing that on to do with as you please. YMMV, and your tolerance for dealing with this face to face as well, but it was good food for thought for me.
Best of luck to you and your future plans! I hope you a) get out of shitty job and b) find something (a job or a school program) that suits you much better and that you find yourself happier in!
