Morality is a constant sore spot for Hiroto. Just what would that be for someone who does espionage as a living? The easy answer out would be saying that his morality is tied to the organisation he works for but... that is not the exact truth either. To truly achieve his objective in most missions, the agent chose to ignore such morality dictated by culture, society, religion and history. Leaving personal feelings to dictate instead.

In the end, the agent is not fond of the words good and evil. After all, a saint known as the infallible good may be a demon known as evil reincarnate in a different religion. A wise sage in the distant past may be an insolent fool in a different time yet revered regardless of the flow of time depending on faction. Too many factors leading to unpredictability with enough time even if things seems set in stone.

In short, no straight answer. The words mean little to him.

Welkin? Cope? The 'keep calm and move on' British man? To cope, you say?

Yes, he sounds like an angry twat from time to time and yes, he seems grumpy most of the time but that in a sense is him coping. Should there were something that requires something much more to take his mind off things? Well... professionally he would just let it be as a coping mechanism because it is only work but if it leaks into private life or it's private and personal that is testing him to the absolute limits?

Well, time to take a few days of retreat, completely cut off from the outside world.

No one would be able to get a hold of him during that time. Phone's turned off, offline, lodgings would be under a pseudonym. A genuine retreat probably up north that no one but Welkin would know. It is his life goal to visit every British city there is and honestly he has already visited almost every English cities and a large number of Welsh cities too, leaving the list mostly Scottish and Northern Irish cities.

If the Patriarch has a bad habit, it is not being direct most of the time. Being raised by a hedonistic father and individualistically ambitious philanthropic of a mother. Kaburagi has always been the meek obedient 'spare' child as the eldest Takashi was the one who hogged the spotlight. Him as the second son? His opinion mattered not. Being direct merely bring forth the ire of his parents and the schadenfreude of the older brother.

Not to mention, he is raised at Kyoto.

Culturally, Kyoto is different from the rest of Japan. Sure, they may hold the stereotype of Kyotoites being snobbish. Japan is already a high-context culture but Kyoto takes it several levels higher. Noisy kids? He will never tell them to shut up. He will merely comment how boisterous they are. This is the art of Sasshi (implicating and anticipating one's needs) and it is commonplace at Kyoto and for this man as well.

So, where does this come with him being angry? Well... if his 'comments' aren't being thought of, his body language will eventually do the talking. Perhaps he slammed the table a little too hard with his elbow when he rest his head on his palm. Perhaps his smile at you does not reach his eyes. Subtle signs of him being enraged. If you are the ignorance is bliss or attempt to further anger him by playing dumb, he will ignore.

Taking the anger out somewhere else and god forbid on someone else.

Or in the situation where ignoring is not an option, well... prepare to be his cash cow.

Unlike her husband, Nanase is not as easily enraged. If anything, she is quite the saint. Yet, if one were to underestimate here and try to treat her like a doormat, she will not spare a single shred of mercy at you in order to make sure you know your place. Her upbringing from Hokkaido by a veteran father meant the matriarch is more tolerant and direct than the patriarch and she knows what she is doing when it comes to discipline.

A talented socialite, she probably would talk less when angry so that she could assess and make her next move. Like the patriarch, she will not hold back either, making them a ruthless pair towards anyone who dared to somehow cross both of them.

As a patriarch of a large family with a small main branch, Kaburagi is calm and collected. He could not afford to be without restrain among branch family members who are constantly bickering and asking for his opinion. He has been doing this ever since his father, the former patriarch died and even more so when his older brother disappeared. Not many things pushes him past the pointof restraint, even with those who constantly tests his patience. Even more so when the patriarch has a habit of attempting to understand people completely before making his moves.

Yet, there are only two people who would make him push past the point of restrain. His older brother and his eldest son. Both are people that some branch family members would rather consider as patriarch. Yet, both are nothing but trash to Kaburagi.

Kaburagi has his biases despite swinging both ways. In other words, the patriarch is much more into men. So when it comes to his wife and women, he is good at separating sex and feelings. However, before that arranged marriage of his and back then when Seikin's grandfather was still the patriarch, it is obviously that he blurs sex and feeling dangerously with any guy he has went that far in with. After all, all eyes were on the then patriarch and the eldest son. No one would bother having expectations of the second son and back then he has free reign to do whatever the hell he wants.

A hard split between men and women seems to be a trait that the now patriarch's eldest son has picked up as well. Albeit selectively. With reasons completely different. Not to mention Kaburagi is subtle with this. Seikin however is not, to the point that it's blatant.

The answer to this question depends on one and only one factor. Is his family that aren't his brothers involved? No? Then it is a social event worth enjoying no matter what, since it is full of outsiders with no pressure from any family member who might be present. Yes? Then it is a social event to be endured. Though if his brothers are also present in said social events then it is less enduring and more of helping the twins.

However! If one asks a Seikin who is still in his teens, it is a completely different question. Is a woman/girl/feminine presenting person present? If yes then it is a social event to be endured or worse, passed without him. Such is the extent of the blond's gynophobia back in the day. Not that it has been completely resolved even as an adult though. Some of the phobia turned into misogyny instead and he got better at hiding.

Is there genuinely a day where no one needs him? Working as an editor that publishes both newspapers and books while doing lectures part-time definitely jammed his schedule to the brim. Even on his days off he has to check on some student's work while double checking some probably trash manuscript from a writer. A repeat to that question. Is there genuinely a day where no one needs him?

Well... assuming such a day exists, then he is definitely not waking up in the morning. Mornings remind Welkin of him. The man known as that former spouse of his who is always up early in the morning with that stupid morning wood of his. It's cute the first few times, it always reminds him of how wanted he is as a spouse but thinking back, anyone would do isn't it? All those times were probably nothing more than relief...

🔪 : what would they do if survival demanded cruelty?

While those around him would desperately do everything to survive during times that demanded cruelty with most stooping to unbelievable levels of low despite having all the resources during peacetime, Welkin would hold firm to his belief of noblesse oblige by keeping a fragile balance of generosity, honour alongside with a firm hand bound with some wariness of not being taken advantage of, precisely in times like this.

In other words, business as usual. Perhaps with no qualms for self-defence should Welkin felt that he is being taken advantage of. Should he be attacked or taken advantage of, then so be it. It only means he has nothing more to offer and a reason to act selfishly as he recuperates, or live out his final moments. He won't be trying to take advantage of others, it is way too much effort and not worth it even in such times.

They are probably in a photo in the Holtons' family album, though none of them would be old enough to remember such a thing. Pretty sure they would go "wait, that was you? huh, interesting..." if such opportunity to observe such a photo.

Welkin does not think much of Nunnally, unfortunately. His split with his former spouse left him extremely bitter of anything American that the talk about coffee from her reminded the editor of his idiot ex and that sucks.

Despite the point stated above, Welkin is gentleman enough to avoid talking about his ex to her at all costs. He does not even know if she is fine with him swinging that way and honestly a little too afraid to figure out if she would understand.
