Sirius didn’t like it. He didn’t like it at all. In fact, he hated it.
He’d been walking through the dorms this morning, hoping to finally catch up on his z’s, when he had heard muffled sounds coming from Remus’ bed.
At first, he’d been annoyed, thought it was an animal or something. Peter was always scuttling about, despite the boys’ constant warning. He never got caught though, so it wasn’t all bad. Still, it annoyed Sirius.
Anyway, he’d thought it was Peter, right? So, he had turned and was just about to yell an annoyed warning, when he set eyes on Remus -REMUS, MIND YOU- curled up on his bed, hands clutching his knees, face tucked in. Crying. That’s what he’d heard. Moony’s muffled sobs… oh god. Oh no.
It was painful, to some extent, watching Remus cry. He seemed to be oblivious to Sirius’ presence, openly breaking down in what he’d assumed was an empty room. It wasn’t though, and Sirius had seen. And Sirius didn’t like it. He should have comforted Remus, said something, anything. But instead he’d fled.
And now he was here, rambling to James, because he didn’t know better. God, he was such an idiot.
“But he’s crying, what do I do?” he asked, tugging at his hair in frustration.
“Go comfort him,” James muttered, head bent over a pile of books. No surprise there, they had a test in about an hour, and due to James insistence that he didn’t need to study, followed by his realization that he actually had to, he had spent the past hour in this position. Sirius didn’t know how James managed to pass each of his classes.
“How do I do that?” Sirius whined. Why was this so hard?
“Start with hugs,” James suggested, still not looking up.
“With WHAT?!” At this, James’ head snapped up.
“What do you mean, ‘with what’?” James said, a slow smile tugging at his lips.
“I dunno…” Sirius shrugged, frowning.
“Okay look. Go to him. Talk to him. Comfort him. Offer hugs, it’s that simple, god.” James explained, shaking his head disbelievingly. Smartass.
“Yes, but… what if he doesn’t want hugs?” I mean, what if Remus just wanted to be left alone?
“Yes well, you won’t know until you try, right?” reasoned James, turning back to his books, now that he’d given Sirius as much attention as he deemed necessary. “Besides, you’re just hesitant because you like him,” he added offhandedly. Wait- WHAT?!
“I DO NOT, HOW DARE YOU ACCUSE ME-“
“Don’t even try to deny it, you’re both terrible at hiding it,” James muttered, cutting him off.
“BOTH?” Sirius exclaimed- momentarily forgetting his struggles- by grabbing James shoulders, and swinging him around.
“Yes both,” James smirked, eyes taking in Sirius’ reaction with great amusement. “Remus likes you too.”
“Remus what???” Sirius was flabbergasted.
James sighed, “Okay look,” he gently extracted himself from Sirius’ death grip before continuing, “how about, you find out for yourself- since you insist not to listen to me- by talking to Moony, hmm?” With that, he rose, shutting his book, and sauntering out of the room, leaving an utterly confused and flustered Sirius behind.
