Retiarius!
Hey, so here's my retiarius design in all her glory! Still not sure how well I like the net design, but until Hero Forge comes up with something better, I think it'll do. On the other hand, I'm fairly pleased with how the kitbashed trident came out. (And, honestly, since the kitbashing feature came out, my favorite use for the glaidus scabbard is using it for a pugio.)

Starting the year off strong with our first prompt, ROMAN. Learning more about the different classes of gladiator, I knew I had to pick a match between the Retiarius and the Murmillo: A Fisherman vs Sea Beast vibe. I took inspiration from Enrico Marini’s art, especially his watercolours featured in his graphic novel series, ‘The Eagles of Rome’ graphic novel series. I haven’t read it, but I follow his socials. One fella even complimented my colour choices, it felt great to see my inspiration shine through.
I had a feeling that most of the group would take inspiration from a Hadrian’s Wall landscape, and the Roman candle just tickled me pink. I love how Neptune came up twice, and one particular member continuing to be creative with the skate inspired by coliseum graffiti.
It has to be said, I’ve never thought about the Roman Empire so much in such a short about of time! 🤣

The Retiarius (fisherman) The Retiarius or Net and Trident fighter, named after the rete or net. This class of Gladiator wore only a subligaria. His sole protection consisted of the Galerus, a metal shoulder guard, which was attached to the top edge of a manica on his left arm. His weapons were the weighted net, a trident and a dagger. With less equipment to weigh him down, the Retiarius was far more mobile than many other gladiators. The Retiarius was usually paired with a Murmillo, a more heavily armed and armoured gladiator.
In today’s Flickr photo with the most hits, taken in the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul, two gladiators face off against one another in the arena.
The are a very traditional pairing: retiarius v secutor. The secutor is named as Perseus.
