There was some controversy in my school district a little while back because they had referred to Special Education classes as Segregated Learning Environment. The word may be heavily associated with but by no means belongs solely to our racist past.
When I went to school the "special education" buildings were what we called portables which were technically sheds that were put as far as possible from any of the other buildings, the "short buses" only ran in the back of the school, we were only allowed to enter through the back of the school, we weren't allowed to use the general bathrooms, we were only allowed to get permission to use a locked one stall bathroom when other classes were in session so the "regular" kids would have no contact with us and if those kids were passing between classes we were made to line up against a wall and were told not to speak to any of them.
There is a time more I could list and I actually went to classes with able-bodied people but I also had to follow these rules of not using the same entrance and never associating with them unless an adult instructed me to. At recess I either had to sit against the wall or stay in the classroom.
