So sick of reading so many comments on facebook saying you shouldn't use food or toy rewards in training because the dog "should be able to learn without it" and "pleasing you" or "a sense of achievement for a job well done" should be "enough" reward, etc. These are the people who end up relying on punishment and fear to enforce what they want, and feel justified doing so out of some sense of entitlement to obedience.
Don't train based on your preconceived notions of what you think "should" be "rewarding enough" for your dog. Train based on what your dog actually finds rewarding and motivating. Insisting your dog be motivated by what you WISH they'd be motivated by doesn't do you or your dog any favors. Don't limit yourself and your dog just because you feel like projecting your idea of what "should be" onto your dog.
