“Glorfindel,” Elrond’s rich voice glided from his mouth in reparation. “You cannot keep that animal here.” He waited but half a breath, “It is a wolf.” Elrond looked upon Glorfindel as if he were a tinge lost, or even unhinged. Glorfindel remained composed, yet detached.
Elladin tried not looking at his father. Tried very much not to glance at the taller warrior, but hiding his mouth from mirth was not working. A gulp and a snicker issued. Elladan sniffed, a small huff of laughter came out. Rigidly standing, Glorfindel waited the berating out. Elrond, sending a disapproving look in Elladin’s direction, turned his attention again to Glorfindel, “Where did you find this .. beast? It could not have been living near the valley; there are not enough places for concealment.”
Glorfindel sighed, tilting his head, trying to think, perhaps reply. He thought better of it all and looked down at the flooring instead. Pursing his mouth.
Elrohir on the other hand folded his arms, made his face cross. The seriousness of the situation disturbed him to no end. Having less patience than his brother, “And why not Father? What is wrong with the animal?,” he asked with petulance. “It is only a canine. It is young. And Glorfindel is old.” Correcting himself, “I meant older. He can handle this wolf pup. The rest of the elves are not afraid.”
Still covering the imminent laughter behind his wicked smile, Elladan imitated his brother in all seriousness, and folded his arms. Looking at Elrond his father, “I agree Father,” sidling next to Elrohir. “Lord Glorfindel should be allowed this small allowance of affection.”
“Affection?,” Elrond reiterated turning to his sons. “This animal is a wolf,” and he studied his two sons.
Glorfindel to his credit did not budge. The two younger elves, the twins of Elrond, one semi groveling, annoyance showing, the other brother jesting with a serious tone, clearly sided with Glorfindel, and was having too much amusement. Elrond, annoyed and irritated did his best to maintain decorum. At one point in the conversation, Glorfindel did shift his footing. Only once.
When all was said and done, “I will not tolerate that beast in my study. Nor anywhere else close to my proximity,” Elrond drove in the argument. “Is my meaning clear?”
When the evenings are long, and the wind howls threatening to cause a disturbance to his fire, a white, floppy eared wolf comes loping down the hall, to sit between his best warrior and his best warrior’s Lord.
