The fun thing about rice is that saying anything at all about how to cook rice will, with absolute 100% reliability, prompt someone to a. accuse you of being American, and b. confidently assert that only Americans do something which is in fact globally widespread. I once had someone tell me to my face that only Americans cook rice with butter.
