and my math teacher was widely known for saying his catchphrase, "math is #1"

Today, one of the most influential math teachers I've ever had the privilege of having, Mr. Richard Geller, passed away from melanoma cancer that had spread to his lungs. Earlier this year, he was chosen by the Stuyvesant High School graduating class of 2011 as faculty speaker. This was the speech I heard in June.

Mr. Geller taught everyone to live life to the fullest: we were inspired by the way he loved his career, his family, and life itself. Even now, people who aren't good at math, hate doing math, or even don't take math anymore, will always remember one thing: the catchphrase we've all had engraved into our minds: "MATH IS #1." You are #1. Thank you for everything you've taught us all.
