The Arrest of Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk - 07 Sep 1571
On This Day (07 Sep) in 1571, Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, was arrested on suspicion of high treason and imprisoned in the Tower of London, due to his involvement in the 'Ridolfi Plot' - a Catholic plot, aiming to free the imprisoned Mary, Queen of Scots and place her on the English throne, usurping Elizabeth I.
Norfolk's trial was held at Westminster Hall in Jan 1572, following which he found guilty of high treason and sentenced to death.
Following his arrest and imprisonment in the Tower of London, Norfolk was supported by his former tutor, martyrologist John Foxe.
