Alternation of volcaniclastic sandstone (grey; resedimented volcanic ash) and lignite (black; low-grade coal derived from land plants). Miocene rift basin in Tsuruoka, Japan. Wood fossil (ca. 30 cm long) at lower right.
Chaotic, monomictic breccia deposited from debris flow in front of an active volcano within the Miocene rift basin along the Japan Sea. Tilted to the left.
Washed vigorously by winter storm waves of the present-day Japan Sea, this outcrop shows conglomerate beds of a fluvial paleoenvironment origin. These were deposited within the very young proto-Japan Sea which was merely a series of faulted valleys on land at that time, 15 million years ago. Tsuruoka city, Yamagata, Japan.
