Checking out my new backyard with my nieces. Windy day spat sand in our faces but it was still welcome. I mean, come on, a beach is awesome no matter the weather. 3.15.13 - "Right Back Where We Started From" by Cleopatra
In the late 90's Disney had a trend of revisiting classic properties and making sequels in a direct-to-video fashion. Many Disney purists were upset at this concept, and while I have seen them all and appreciate their place in "Disney History" I can also understand why they were criticized.
One of the lesser talked about "sequels" was a movie called "An Extremely Goofy Movie" which was a follow up to 1995's "A Goofy Movie." In the sequel, Goofy's son Max (one of the only Disney characters to actually age) heads off to college for his freshman year, only to have his Goofy dad join him after realizing that he needs to finish his degree to get a better job. As you can guess, this causes comical tension for the Father and Son before working itself out. During his return to College, Goofy meets the librarian, Sylvia, who shares a love for the 1970's and joins Goofy on a date where they go dancing.
The movie was released while I was working for the Disney Store, and we were promoting it months in advance via the in-store movie This, of course, meant that I knew all of the songs and the preview by heart long before its release. The big single of the soundtrack was the song that Goofy and Silvia dance to...a remake of the classic "Right back where we started from" sung by the girl group Cleopatra.

At the same time as the movie's release, The Disney Store was going through some process changes, and there was a major focus on the Cast really walking around the store and interacting with the Guests like never before. In fact, standing in one spot for more than 20 seconds was frowned upon, which was a major difference for all of us. We learned to fold shirts while walking, and also called this new process the "Disney Store" exercise program.
One of the store managers, Carissa, worked with me a lot during this time, and one night she started to do a Dance-walk to this song when it came on as a way to make the new process more comfortable. In addition to just the walking, she threw in some disco moves and made working there fun. It's the only thing I can think of whenever I listen to this song, or see the film.
Carissa is celebrating her birthday today, and while I'm sure she doesn't remember this song or moment as vividly as I do, I will never forget how much fun I had working with her! Happy Birthday!
