Emma had stopped at a street vendor to get Henry some hot chocolate. The weather was a little colder than usual and he’d been begging the last two blocks for coffee. She’d vetoed that right away, saying that an eleven year old had no business having that much caffeine. So when she spotted the vendor across the street, she immediately got in line.
While she was ordering, she noticed Henry stepped away from her. In a hurry to pay the man, she took the drink and turned around to look for him. Spotting his dark blue coat at the park across the street, she nearly stopped traffic to race across the road to him. He was smiling and leaning over to pet what looked like a German Shephard. “Henry... you know better than to go off on your own.” Seemed like his rebellious teen phase was starting a little early. Seeing a man by the dog’s side, she steeled her gaze a bit. “I’m sorry if he was bothering you.”
The words seemed kind but there was an underlying mistrust underneath them. Taking Henry’s hand, she passed him the hot chocolate. Emma had reason to be wary of strangers just like any other parent but her feelings were intensified due to her career path. Being a bounty hunter meant she was more suspicious than the average person. It also helped that she had the talent of being a human lie detector. “You’ve got a beautiful dog.”
