If you like: rising dead * military camps * training
In Reboot, the KDH virus causes some people, primarily children, to return to life, or reboot, after they have died. The longer they remain dead before rebooting, the less humanity they reboot with. They do gain some physical advantages after death, increased speed and agility, and the ability to self-heal after an injury. This makes them the perfect enforcers, and so HARC, the Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation, has taken possession of them. The reboots are trained as soldiers, and used to capture criminals and bring in new reboots. Though they are powerful, they are treated like monsters and caged; they are controlled by having no freedom or rights. Constantly looking for easy ways to improve their toy soldiers, HARC also experiments on the more-human reboots seeking to make them more like their coveted emotionless killing machines.
Rye awoke with a start. Someone was banging on the door. No. Something was banging on the door. Clenching his rifle tight Rye jumped to his feet and quickly, but quietly, slinked to the door. He held his ear close and listened. He could hear the growling and moaning of the walker right on the other side.
At the moment Rye was on the third floor of an abandoned office building on the outskirts of Atlanta. Of course now every building was considered abandoned but Rye had made his way to the outskirts knowing there would likely be less walkers then in the main center of the city.
Rye listened closely for a couple minutes until he was positive there was only one walker before leaning his rifle up against the wall and pulling out his knife. He unhinged the lock, swung the door open, and without even hesitating Rye jammed the knife right through the fuckers eye. Blood splattered back into Rye’s face.
“ugh!” Rye sighed in disgust as he jumped back into the room he’s just been held up in. Cautiously he peeked around the corner to make sure no more were coming. Once satisfied he was once again alone Rye glanced back down at the dead walker lying in front of him.
“Fuck!” It suddenly hit him. Rye ran back to his pack and started throwing everything back inside. Seeing a walker out this far meant only one thing: their food supply in the inner city was running low. They were moving out, so Rye had to move out before they did.
Rye put the rifle in its sling on his back, threw his backpack on over it, and then, preparing his knife, Rye slipped out the door and stealthily made his way down the hall, moving as fast as he dared. He made sure to check around every corner before proceeding. And somehow he managed to make it down two flights of stairs and to the front door without any incident. Maybe he was panicking. Maybe that walker had been there all along and they really weren’t moving out this far. Or maybe he was just trying to make himself feel better. Either way he needed to get the hell out of the city. As much as it pained him, as much as he hated it he knew Emily was gone. No amount of searching was going to do her any good if he got bit, or worse, eaten.
Rye peered out the front door and noticed some walkers scuffling about. “Shit!” He cursed under his breath. He looked around a bit, and then remembered there was a back door to this place. He rushed down the hall, keeping his blade up at his side, ready to strike. When he reached the back emergency exit he saw that the door was sitting wide open. That must have been how the bastard had gotten in. “Son of a bitch.” Rye shook his head as he tip-toed toward the door. He looked out around the corner and, once again, saw several walkers shuffling back and forth.
Rye jumped back as a walker suddenly sprang out from around the corner. He let out an involuntary yell, which likely caught some attention, as he stumbled backwards. The walker leaped at him but Rye managed to duck out of the way. As that one landed on the floor Rye looked up to see a row of walkers coming in through the open door. Letting out a sort of rebel yell Rye charged forward, running into the first walker and pushing him out the door and on top of the walkers behind him. The all fell like dominos with Rye landing on top. He jammed the knife through the skull of the walker he was laying on, then leapt up to his feet and took off as fast as he could. He sprinted down the alley, skidding to a halt at the front sidewalk. He saw the walks out on the street and made the mistake of pausing long enough for one of them to get a whiff. It turned and its huge yellow eyes land right on him.
“Oh, fuck…” Rye breathed helplessly before he turned and took off down the sidewalk. They had him in their sites, all he could do now was run, and hope he could get away. The further he went, however, the more walkers he seemed to attract. He had suddenly become a beam of light, drawing out all the parasites right toward him.
“God, what do I do, what do I do, what do I do…” Rye just kept repeating to himself as he sprinted down the street. After about 5 minutes of running he came to a very narrow alleyway. Barely wide enough for him, with his broad shoulders and masculine physique (which also included a large backpack packed with supplies). But he figured if he went down it then they’d only be able to come at him one at the time.
Rye looked back at the mob behind him, then turned back and squeezed himself into the alley. It was his only chance. Behind him he could hear the mob clamber up against the small opening, all of them trying to get at him at once. Everyone time one managed to get through Rye would jab his knife into its skull until the alley was so piled up with bodies none could get through.
“Hah!” Rye laughed, mostly because he’d somehow just cheated death.
He then turned and ran the rest of the way down the alley. He turned left when he got to the end and ran through the back alley until he came up to a convenience store. Rye looked around, made sure all was clear, and then ducked inside. If he was lucky he’d be able to replenish his diminishing supplies.
He slipped his knife into its pocked on his belt and slowly made his way inside. He walked through the back until he came up to the front of the store. Which was almost completely bare.
“Damn it…” Rye sighed, putting his hands on his hips. He stood there a moment, letting himself catch his breath when he heard a noise in one of the isles. Instinctively Rye snapped out his gun and pointed it toward the noise. He moved sideways along the main isle, keeping his side arm at the ready to shoot anything he saw moving. When he reached the fourth isle he spotted a woman crouched down at the other end. She was thin, with dark hair, but that was all he could see because he was looking at the back of her head. Rye stared for almost a minute until he finally was able to utter the name that had instantly popped into his head the moment he saw the woman.
