Medical Nuisance; Rita + Jyrda
Sirens feed on hapless victims drawn from their safe beaches or hulking ships into the depths of the ocean. It’s the way it has always been. However, in Sumner, Jyrda has slowly learned that numerous mortals lay in the town hospital. They’re ailing or injured due to any number of circumstances. Though mortal medicine holds little interest to Jyrda as an immortal being, free of disease, the thought of what might go on within the hospital has begun to intrigue her.
Thus, after a full day of teaching at the Academy, Jyrda wanders through the whooshing self-propelled doors into the hospital’s interior. Disregarding the young woman at the front desk who blinks but can’t find reason to question her. The siren’s wet hair drips water on the polished floor, her clothes unfortunately soaked as well thanks to the tide.
Each wing seems to go on forever, like the underwater tunnels she and her sisters have occupied over the centuries. Yet here it’s sterile, colour bleached from the furniture and walls. Jyrda peers through windows into patient rooms, unaware that a few of those who catch sight of her sunken bruised appearance begin to page nurses with claims of a wraith or angel of death lurking through the halls.
She has been stopped twice since taking to her curious trek and has dismissed them before moving on. Much to the nurses’ chagrin. Now as she rounds a corner into a more hectic atmosphere--patients lay in varying states of distress as others are rushed in by uniformed personnel--Jyrda finds someone new calling out for her attention. As she turns to face them, she sighs. “Yes? What do you want?”
