Las aguas termales provienen de fuentes subterráneas del macizo de Bonastre, canalizadas hasta una fuente ornamental exterior, desde la que pasa a un pequeño estanque y, de éste, a un riachuelo que desemboca en el mar. El estanque se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad, a pocos metros del arroyo y de la playa. Coma-Ruga es una encantadora localidad costera del municipio de El Vendrell, provincia de Tarragona. Allí, entre otros lugares de interés, se encuentran el Riuet, pequeña afluente de agua dulce, a manera de arroyo, y el Estany, el estanque de donde fluye esa agua que alimenta el Riuet. Las aguas de ambos fueron declaradas mineromedicinales por dictamen de la Real Academia de Medicina y Cirugía de Barcelona en 1892. El Dr. August Pi Sunyer determinó en 1919 que, por sus propiedades, debían catalogarse como aguas termales cloruradas alcalinas, bromuradas y casi isotónicas.
