River Jump: A Graduation Tradition
By: Robert Vela III Nov. 20, 2018
Texas State University holds graduation ceremonies every semester for students finishing their journeys through college. One of the traditions associated with graduation that’s unique to Texas State is the long-held tradition of jumping into the San Marcos River at Sewell Park. Plunging into the river is a grand finale. Many students are definitely looking forward to participating.
“It’s only going to be for a second,” said Texas State senior Ashlyn Reyna. “Hopefully, I’m going to get right out. It’s kind of exciting but at the same time it’s kind of nerve-wracking.”
But some students say they WON'T be among those jumping in the river.
“I just don’t see a point,” Texas State senior Kaitlyn Larner said. “You’re ruining your dress, your hair, your make-up, everything you had planned for graduation. I just feel like it ruins it so that’s me.”
Those who plan to take the dive say it's a tradition they simply can't ignore. “I was excited because it’s like something people before us have done so it’s kind of cool to keep on that tradition,” said Texas State senior Christen Povolish. "Do it, because you only graduate once from Texas State.”
