Meanwhile, fresh out of jail... I had the opportunity to meet Itumeleng Makwela (google him) while at Robben Island. Being able to tour this historic prison where many leaders and political prisoners, including Nelson Mandela, spent their time under unjust times was very powerful. I’m thankful to live in a time where people who were literally imprisoned and oppressed with Nelson Mandela, can personally share their stories and show you around the prison. Simultaneously, it’s disheartening to live in a time period, where oppression was only a “few” years ago. South Africa is still a new country, and dealing with widespread racism today. Obviously it will take some time to move forward and “right the wrongs” of the past, however, understanding that same past of oppression is key to moving forward, and never allowing the past to repeat itself. Listening to stories of the past, and relating them to our current times was very eye opening... It’s not clichè to #StayWoke if you’re really trying to be woke. For anyone that wants to join, this will be an annual trip to #CapeTown #SouthAfrica with www.urbaneventsglobal.com #RobbenIsland #RobbenIslandPrison #ItumelengMakwela #NelsonMandela #UrbanEventsGlobal (at Robben Island)
