She’d become accustomed to silence over the years, not letting it dictate her own emotions or the way she interacted with others — no, that last part was saved for her own self-serving ways, the thought of opening up the depths of her mind to another person enough to make her outwardly cringed. Rosalyn had found a sort of odd solace in the deputy over the past few months. They weren’t friends, obviously (at least, she wouldn’t consider them to be), but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t someone enjoy his company. Tolerate, is how she would put it, and even that would have to be yanked out of her.
“Lost a guy today at work,” she mentioned casually, finally breaking the silence with a shrug. She sucked down on the cigarette a bit more, being sure to blow the smoke away from where Robbie was standing. “Craniectomy. It’s high risk, I told the guy from the beginning that it probably wasn’t worth it. He was sixty-something years old, had a history of heart disease. Honestly, I’m surprised the surgery was even approved, but the guy had great insurance.” She scoffed. “Anyway, that’s my night. You kill anyone yourself today?” Her sense of humor was rather dry, but Robbie was probably accustomed to it by now. And, if not — well, that was his loss.
