the beginning;;

canonically, astaroth was a demon who often portrayed themselves as a fallen angel to those who summoned them. they have knowledge of past, present, and future events, and they have a lot of knowledge about the fall of lucifer and his angels the most.

that is a piece of canon i don’t normally use on this blog since my canon was that astaroth was created by lucifer (solely) as sort of a mockery of god’s creations. like an “i can create too.” in my background for them, lucifer took bark from the tree of knowledge of good and evil to use as astaroth’s body. this is also a piece of my own lore i’ve used to connect to ash’s knowledge of past, present, and future events. not only would they know about the fall because of the tree bark, but because the tree was already in the garden to witness the fall. they were there, but not as themselves. also, there was residual knowledge in that bark.

normally, i say that the above image of ashtoreth is a blend between his true form (pictured below) and their temptation vessel, since it is the same fc (also pictured below). BUT because ash didn’t obtain the temptation vessel until the 1830s, i was trying to find a tie in the continuity. ultimately, i’ve decided that this version of temptation is not actually a vessel, but a projection of themselves. an illusion cast (like succubi and incubi). i’ve always said that ash can cast an illusion, but it’s not something they do very often.

when ash was created and the wars were starting, they were unable to maintain a vessel. before the strength vessel, they had no idea how to continuously heal their vessels and would consistently rot through them because they could not handle their demonic energy. this in part, ash used to cast a sort of angelic image of themselves and spread word of the fall as, you guessed it, a fallen angel. this image of themselves that ash created was to give off this ethereal, otherworldly aura which only helped to strengthen that they were, indeed, a fallen angel. they eventually stopped casting this illusion when they started obtaining vessels because it was much less of a waste of energy to regenerate a vessel little by little than cast a full illusion. astaroth is not a demon naturally gifted in shape shifting, so it takes more of a toll to do so. they do still don the illusion in hell since that is their home, and it would be a much greater cost to their energy to regenerate a living human in hell versus presenting this image.

there are other reasons why ash was drawn to the temptation vessel later on, but one of them was that he reminded themselves so much of their presented form.

sorry for the mobile post, but i have been working on some lore and background stuff for both astaroth and the temptation vessel.

i will probably make a few posts about it today because i’m starting to link parts of astaroth’s canon to the lore that i’ve created around them to make them a fleshed out character. i’m honestly...really excited about it??? because i’m filling in some plot inconsistencies/threading in more canon text???

and i’m really excited about temptation’s backstory because it really helps to explain why he feels like such a tragic lover 🤍
