The way Bud Smith and Robert K. Lambert’s cuts are timed perfectly to the beat would almost turn this into a joke were it not for the crushing banal despair on Roy Scheider’s face, which carries so much of the rest of the movie with it. It’s strange to remember a time when guys who honest to god looked like the blue collar people they portrayed were a norm.
