Dire Straits: “Walk Of Life” (1985)
The AA-side to “So Far Away From Me” (’85), as the band out-voted their producer to include this single for their fifth record Brothers In Arms. Singer Mark Knopfler goes two-for-one with a song about the busking lifestyle: city subway and sidewalk performers playing the classics. A generous amount of those classics he hat-tips in the lyrics are Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman” and “What I’d Say” (’54 and ’59), Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-A-Lula” (’56), Robert Nighthawk’s “My Sweet Lovin’ Woman” (’48) and Bobby Darin’s “Mack The Knife” (’59). They all make it in his who’s-who of blues and rock, “oldies” which came to be in the Eighties tense and many becoming “goldies” and #1 hits. What should be noted was that one of those musicians, Robert Nighthawk (real name Robert Lee McCollum), was a busker himself throughout his broadcasting and recording career.
A smattering of other AA-sides appear on this single which are live versions of “Two Young Lovers” and “Eastbound Train”, “Sultan Of Swing”, “One World”, “Why Worry”, “Ride Across The River”, and “So Far Away”.
