Electricity (Light Green and Blue), 2016 Robert Dunt

One of Robert Dunt's "Electricity Paintings". These painting deal with colour and space. Robert is endeavouring to push simple colour combinations to their absolute limit. Working in a similar sphere to the pointillists he wants the colours to mix in the eye of the viewer. He is also working within the premise that colour is actually space. As the viewer looks the two colours wrestle with each other in space. Sometimes the 'background' colour appears to hover in front of the 'foreground' colour. While inherently abstract these paintings reference many things we see in the real world, such as wheatfields, rain dripping down windows or light flickering on water. One of the pleasures of these paintings is the way they constantly change as light strikes them at different times of day, a beauty inherent to real oil paintings. The paintings open up new visual experiences and intensify the visual acuity of people who look at them and live with them. The aim is to make something poetic and intelligent from very simple ingredients.

Gargagno - Limited Edition 17 of 50, Robert Dunt

A limited edition digital print of a view from a hotel in Gargagno, in Italy, where D H Lawrence stayed for a while. This digital print comes from an original pencil drawing that the artist Robert Dunt made while staying there. Robert then scanned the pencil drawing into photoshop and coloured the picture there. So the final work is only produced physically once it is printed out. The work has an elegant and beautiful simplicity that plays on the simple flat sections of colour and the formal beauty that is afforded to the picture by the way the tress allows the green colour to come into contact with both the violet and blue colours. This print, and the others in the series, called the Orchid Suite, were inspired by Picasso's Vollard Suite. In Picasso's Vollard Suite, Picasso often sets up image between an artist, his model and the work he has produced. It is as if the work the artist has made is a reflection of the model he has copied. There is a poetic strand in these works about the real and the reflection, as the artist is often seen to be gazing at both the model and the work he has produced. Robert's Orchid Suite looks to make similar poetic comments and raise arguments about drawing and photography through contrasts.

Trebor Distortion, Robert Dunt

This is one of Robert Dunt's "Distortion Form" paintings. These paintings are inspired by music, and in particular the band the Jesus and Mary Chain. Robert was influenced by paintings that explored colour such as the works by the artist Partick Heron who worked prominently in the 1970s. But he did not just want to recreate these paintings and so began looking at a way of using colour in a more contemporary context. The Jesus and Mary Chain wrote pretty "Beach Boys" like pop songs but then covered them with noise and distortion and feedback. In a similar fashion Robert painted pretty "Patrick Heron" like paintings and then covered them with black and white "Distortion Forms", a visual metaphor for the noise and distortion used by the Jesus and Mary Chain. Though inspired by music these paintings are firmly rooted in the visual, and work on making original colour combinations. The paintings also reference the act of seeing, the freneticism of some sections of the paintings referencing visual experiences such as looking at, and through, the branches of tress as they shake in the wind. Like all Robert's paintings the aim is to give the viewer greater visual pleasure of the the world and the colours they see in it.

Yellow and Blue Distortion - Limited Edition 1 of 50, Robert Dunt

The underlying structure has the broken elements of a picture plane that has been distorted by cubism. The overlaying colours and Distortion Forms then add to this creating a fluctuating sense of depth, created both by the colours in the painting, which have a depth of their own, and the layering of the different levels of the painting, finishing with the Distortion Forms on the top.
