"Golden Shred, The Family Favourite" - The character known as Golly on jars of Robertson's jam and marmalade was a black-faced minstrel doll with his natty red bow tie and trousers, a blue jacket and a yellow waistcoat. Robertson's continued use of the character since the 1910s finally hit headlines in the 1980s when it was condemned as a racist symbol, but wasn't taken off the labels until 2002.

1960 Robertson’s Department Store Christmas Catalog

Robertson’s was a major department store in downtown South Bend, Indiana. I moved to SB in 2007 and it was long gone by that point. The store closed in 1986.
