"Golden Shred, The Family Favourite" - The character known as Golly on jars of Robertson's jam and marmalade was a black-faced minstrel doll with his natty red bow tie and trousers, a blue jacket and a yellow waistcoat. Robertson's continued use of the character since the 1910s finally hit headlines in the 1980s when it was condemned as a racist symbol, but wasn't taken off the labels until 2002.

yeeeeah I forget about him. yeah he shows up in Black Dossier, the moon adventure and a few other stories. definitely when the series went in different direction then I thought they were going.

Black people. Is a mug with an image of a gollywog on it offensive? Need to prove a point to my mother who says it's just a mug, It cannot be offensive

For the second part of the first year we were given the stimulus “Boundaries”. I chose to examine the boundary of racism and how that boundary has shifted during my lifetime: how the colloquial expressions and language which described people of different ethnic backgrounds used then is now totally politically incorrect. I examined works by:- Michael Ray Charles; Anders Bergstrom; Kara Walker: Chris Ofili and Makode Linde. As well as these artist studies and my responses to their work, I examined the origin of the ‘Gollywog’, Minstrelsy and Morris Dancing, American folk art and racism, ‘The Brown Bag Test’, the Slave Trade, concentrating on Slavery in South Wes England and ‘ The Cradle of Humanity’.
