Dissertation thoughts of the week:

I'm nearly finished with the rewrites and expansion of my lit review chapter, including rounding out the underground imaginaries section. I'm waiting on a few library requests, including David Farrier's Anthropocene Poetics, which I saw extensively quoted in one paper and introduced me to the useful and evocative phrase "deep futures."

I also ended up using the phrase "deep time" enough that I felt like it needed a footnote, which led to rereading some John McPhee, who apparently coined the phrase to begin with, in Basin and Range, when talking about our understanding of geologic time scales as first described by James Hutton.

I can't quite work it into the chapter - I've already gone a little too far down the literature rabbit hole in some ways that will have to be edited down - but the other outcome from this reading and rereading is that I once again have this Hutton quote about Earth rattling around my head:

No vestige of a beginning, no prospect of an end
