RTARL goes back in time to wonder what the hell Lou Holtz was doing with his offense at Notre Dame

From 1988 to 1990, Lou Holtz coached Notre Dame teams featuring one of the greatest offensive weapons in the history of the sport of college football and, over those three years combined, that player got the ball 202 times on offense.

Even if you add in Raghib “Rocket” Ismail’s kick and punt returns he only got the ball 273 times in 34 games (not including bowls.) Even though the Irish won a national championship during that time (1988, hopefully their last ever) one has to wonder now just what in the hell Holtz was doing with a player who was widely acknowledged in 1989 and 1990 as the best in the country.

I don’t have any insight to add to this, I’m just marveling at the stupidity of designing an offense that way. Even with a bunch of other future NFL guys on the roster there has never been another Notre Dame player in my lifetime that approached Ismail’s magnetism on the field. Every time he touched the ball it was like the whole country held its collective breath because something crazy was about to happen. Look at this shit, it’s malpractice:

SEC: Mississippi (Alabama)

BIG10: Wisconsin (Michigan)

Pac12: Stanford (USC)

ACC: Clemson (Florida State)

Big12: West Virginia (West Virginia)

National Champs: Notre Dame (USC)

It's not that I'm a huge N.D. fan, although the Irish and Michigan were the only games I got to see as a young lad growing up in southern Ontario. I'd just like to see them--and the mid-west in general--return to relevance. But, sorry Rocket, it's not gonna happen, that schedule looks way too tough.
