36. “Just because you’re a jackass doesn’t mean I hate you.”

Feat. Rocket and Peter Quill

Sometimes, their missions go sideways. It’s not usually anyone’s fault, necessarily. It’s just that, sometimes, someone makes a bad call or jumps the gun. It’s usually Quill, which is why everyone else on the team is shocked when Rocket gets too trigger happy on their latest mission. It’s also why Quill takes every opportunity afterwards to tease Rocket about it for the next month.

The problem, then, is that Rocket is definitely not the one who usually takes Quill’s shit like that. He laughs along the first couple times, but then it gets real old, real fast. He stops laughing, hoping Quill will take the hint. He doesn’t, but Gamora notices and starts hitting Quill on the arm when he makes a crack. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to deter him. He still makes fun of Rocket and baits him.

“Oh, damn these controls are fried again,” Quill gripes from the cockpit. The Milano has been giving them problems, and Rocket’s had to work on it too much for his liking.

“Here, lemme get in there,” Rocket sighs, grabbing his tools.

“What, so you can shoot it out?” Quill quips, grinning like he’d the funniest bastard in the galaxy.

Gamora isn’t there to smack him, and Rocket is fed up. He throws a wrench at Quill’s head and jumps up on the copilot’s seat to glare at him, clenching his fists. “Hey, look asshole, I get that I fucked up, okay? But if you’re gonna hate me for it, could’ja at least do it silently? I’m gettin’ real sick’a your shit. I don’t do this every time you fuck up!”

For some reason, Quill doesn’t immediately argue with him. He actually looks a little concerned.  “It’s not like that. Just because you’re a jackass doesn’t mean I hate you.” Quill shrugs then, obviously trying to hide the fact that he just kind of admitted he cares about Rocket. “Anyways, if it really bothered you that much, all you had to do was say so.”

Rocket narrows his eyes, but he supposes this is as good as he's gonna get out of Quill, so he jumps off the chair and gets down to pull a panel off the bottom of the control board. “Yeah, whatever, asshole.”

He shouldn’t need his gun for this, but when he opens the panel, he actually finds a small alien of some kind chewing on some wires. Rocket sighs, knowing he’ll never hear the end of this, and pulls out his weapon to shoot into the panel.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Avengers: No Road home #1 cover and poster. The poster should be in stores on Feb 6th and the issue on Feb 13th. Done in ink wash and acrylic on 16"X23" watercolor board. I've been playing with lighting a lot more recently because I realized it was one of my weaknesses. I can render in natural or model lighting pretty well but realized I lacked the skill to do moody or tinted lighting. I had an art teacher many years ago say that an artist should figure out what they're weakest at and practice your weakness above all else. Once you figure out it out you move on to your next weakness.
