Real Laughs, Real People – Comedy Performances in NYC That Hit Different
New York is loud, fast, and chaotic — and so is the comedy. At Rodney’s Comedy Club, we bring together voices that are raw, real, and funny as hell. Our comedy performances in NYC aren’t polished for TV. They’re unpredictable, magnetic, and deeply human. Come for the jokes, stay for the weird and wonderful people who make it all happen.
How to Plan a Night Out Around New York Comedy Club Events
New York City is always buzzing, but few nights out rival the thrill of an evening built around a great comedy show. With world-class performers, iconic venues, and a city that never sleeps, attending a New York comedy club event can be the centerpiece of an unforgettable night.
But to turn a comedy show into a full experience, it takes a bit of insider planning. From choosing the right show to pre-show bites and after-show drinks, here’s how to craft the perfect NYC comedy night.
Why Choose a Comedy Club Night in NYC?
Comedy clubs offer something unique in a city full of entertainment options. They provide:
Live, unscripted energy
A chance to see rising stars and big names
An intimate, interactive atmosphere
More than just a night of laughs, comedy events can be a social experience, a date night highlight, or even a casual solo evening out.
Step 1: Pick the Right Comedy Event
Know What Kind of Comedy You Like
From observational humor and political satire to raunchy sets and absurdist acts, NYC has it all. Comedy club events range from open mics and themed nights to headliner showcases and special tapings.
Look at Club Schedules in Advance
Comedy clubs often post their lineups weekly. Look for:
Comedian profiles
Set start times
Ticket availability and pricing
Rodney's Comedy Club, for example, regularly updates its event calendar with a mix of established comics and rising voices. Whether you're into sharp wit or raw storytelling, Rodney's lineups deliver variety with a pulse on what’s trending.
Step 2: Make Pre-Show Dinner Plans
Nothing sets the tone like a great meal before the show. Aim for something within walking distance of the club and allow at least 90 minutes for a relaxed dinner.
Popular Choices Include:
Bistros and gastropubs for a cozy, casual vibe
Pizza or burger joints if you're keeping it simple
Upscale spots for date nights or celebrations
On Manhattan's Upper East Side, near Rodney's, you’ll find everything from classic delis to elegant wine bars—perfect for fueling up before a night of laughs.
Step 3: Arrive Early and Get the Best Seat
Why Early Matters:
Clubs often seat on a first-come basis
You avoid last-minute stress
You can grab a drink and settle in
At Rodney’s, arriving 20-30 minutes early gives you time to enjoy the art-deco-inspired surroundings and get a prime view of the stage. Their full bar and welcoming staff help set the mood.
Step 4: Enjoy the Show Like a Local
Respect the Room
NYC comedy crowds are sharp and engaged. Show appreciation with laughs, not heckles. Keep phones away and let the comics do their thing.
Be Ready for the Unexpected
Part of the fun is not knowing what’s coming next. Comics test new material, riff with the crowd, and react in real time. This spontaneity is what makes live comedy in NYC so addictive.
Step 5: Keep the Night Going After the Show
Comedy doesn’t have to be the end of the night.
Post-Show Ideas:
Grab a late-night bite at a nearby diner or food truck
Find a cozy bar for nightcaps and people-watching
Talk comedy — share favorite jokes or even meet some of the comics after the set
Rodney’s Comedy Club often hosts shows with a social vibe. Many performers stick around after their set, giving fans a chance to say hello or snap a quick pic. It’s part of what makes a night at Rodney’s feel more personal than polished.

It was my first time to try eating raw oysters. I haven’t liked oysters, but I could eat this time. However, I still don’t like the pan fried oysters. hum-mmm....
Cava and Oysters Rodney’s The other day I decided to go visit a friend while he was tending bar at Rodney’s oyster house. About two beers in I ended up being asked to take part in a quick photo session that another blog was operating. Of course being the show boat that I am, I immediately agreed.
After finishing up I went back to my seat at the bar and was greeted with a freshly shucked oyster topped with pares Balta cava. Now if you don’t know by now, I love cava. I’ve started buying it by the case for personal consumption. A bottle of friexenet for breakfast is my favourite indulgence, so needless to say, I was very pleased with this little surprise.
I am very new to eating oysters, this being only the second and third fresh oyster I’ve ever eaten. My first was also at Rodney’s where I was taught to shuck as well by the very same bartender. The cava paired beautifully, it wasn’t overly sweet, the tartness pairing with the brine better then I would’ve ever imagined, to the point of this being one of my favourite snacks. I am looking forward to going back to Rodney’s and having a few of these again.
Just Kids
Just heard from a dear friend I've lost track of who has finally got his first album made. (Big ups, @Tumbleweed Rob!)
The last time I heard from him was five years ago, when a mutual friend-of-a-friend told me she had found him on Facebook.
"Remember when we all used to sneak out and go dance in Hollywood? I wanted to look like Sable Starr. You never did. I wonder what happened to her. I wonder what happened to us".

"The only thing I remember about you two is that you were always together, and that you were the only one in school who wore dresses. They looked like the housedresses in Godfather I, but _______ made them for you, so you wore them. And you were both sexy in an anti-social way, but you never looked at anybody, and we knew he was into dudes.

"And you hardly ever went to class, but you always knew the answer. You never raised your hand. That got on my nerves.
Anyway, how are you? I'm big into American Idol now, my kids got me into it lol. Hope to see you at our 30th in June."
I don't wonder.
I remember.
And then I write about it, turn off the t.v. and computer, and move on.
