Flag of Malta

The current flag of Malta was adopted in 1964. The colors of the Maltese flag purportedly date back to the 11th century, when Roger I, Count of Sicily, conquered Malta and liberated the island's Christian population. Roger is said to have torn the colors from his banner and gifted them to the nation. The George Cross dates from WWII, when Malta, then a British colony, was sieged by German and Italian forces. To commemorate the heroism and courage of the Maltese people, King George VI awarded the island the cross, which was added to the country's flag on a blue canton. The text of the cross reads "For Gallantry." In 1964 the canton was replaced with red fimbriation to make it less prominent.

Norman arch at Mazara di Valle, Sicily. Actually a gate to Norman castle that was built by Count Roger I in 1070s after the conquest of Mazara.

Yet another member of Norman  Hauteville family :). This time coin depicts Roger I, who was definitely one of the greatest military leaders of the clan. The Great Count conquered Sicily and ruled the island for thirty years.

Normans began the conquest of Sicily in 1061 when Robert Guiscard and Roger I invaded island. In this painting the brothers are receiving the keys of Palermo from saracens. The capture of the city took place in 1072.
