talk to me about faye/spike aka the very definition of ust and frustration and oh god why do i ship them it is so painful!!!

RIGHT?!?!?! It's honestly one of the most painful ships of my life! And I never wanted to ship it! But 13 year old Kate was unstoppable in her shipping habits tbh (totally different from 24 year old Kate! not).

And then the two of them, and their perfect character constructions (let's talk about characterization/development on Cowboy Bebop because WOW good lord what a perfect piece of media god bless everyone involved), it's like HOW CAN YOU NOT! Faye, the girl with no past who desperately wants one, and Spike, who can't escape his past no matter how hard he tries--and then struggles with the fact that it's his past and not his present--and they're put together in close quarters and found family!!!! But I've always found the juxtaposition of the two of them SO INTERESTING because all Faye wants is to belong to something somewhere and Spike wants to not belong to anything.

I think that's one of the things that made me really love Faye as a character: the fact that she wants to belong, she wants to have a past and a family and people who love her, but because of what's happened to her she's SO afraid of being vulnerable so she has to lie and cheat and steal as her way of living but she's such a mush. Faye is so used to looking out for herself and protecting herself that she truly believes no one will care about her. She does things like take all Jet's money and fuel and run away to Callisto because she wants Jet and Spike to come after her! She wants so badly to be loved and to belong! But she's also brash and quick to anger and she likes to push people to their limits to test them and see if they still care, if they'll still come back at the end of the day.

And it's like, Faye is the complete 100% opposite of the kind of woman Spike is attracted to. I love before we get to meet Julia, and we just see her in these little flashbacks with music playing over them, and Julia is so beautiful and gentle and demure. And you can see why Spike loved her, why he wanted to risk everything for her, but to me, Julia is like, this construction, or this idea. She's not real. But she was very likely the first "good" thing that Spike ever had in his life, and he puts all his stock in her because he has nothing else. As if, if someone like Julia could love someone like Spike, then he would be okay. (Not to mention that Julia has very questionable taste in men and probably had some super shady stuff going on (where's my prequel? War on Titan, crime syndicates, baby Vicious???).)

I love that Spike is so messed up and so detached from everything that he doesn't want to care about Jet and Faye and Ed and even Ein, but he does! I love that he loves to tease Faye to get a rise out of her! I love that Spike and Faye could have been fresh starts for each other, that they could have lived a beautiful life of bounty hunting and crazy adventures and tricking Jet into cooking them dinner for all of eternity. I love that the entire time, Faye was the one who thought she needed saving, but it was Spike who needed to be saved from himself. Reluctant partners! Hot-headed dummies with tragic backstories! Everything about my life makes perfect sense now!

What are your favourite tropes in fanfic or fave tropes in general?

OH MAN so many!!!! I think my all-time favorites though are: ragtag bunch of misfits, found families, jerkass with a heart of gold, platonic life partners, they really do love each other!, daddy issues, and others I'm blanking on!! I like these in fic or books or movies or TV shows or anything!

I can’t claim responsibility for this little part, because I have to give most of it to Libby. When I wrote this story for her, I went through my blog and her blog and Skype messages to take all the things and headcanons we said about Jeff/Britta and play around with them a little in different universes and time frames. This one is one of my favorites tbh. :)

If I remember this correctly (and I think I do) we were talking about Britta being really short and Jeff teasing her about this and putting things out of her reach to annoy her. And then—because it’s us—it escalated pretty quickly into “Jeff would put the engagement ring high up where he thinks Britta can’t find it but she’s nosy and she finds it anyway!” Obviously that idea was too cute NOT to flesh out into a little drabble!

I go back and forth about how I feel about Jeff/Britta/marriage. I like it in fic but not so much in canon; or at least, I dislike the idea of it happening in canon in a very traditional sort of way. I think the show does some really great things regarding J/B/marriage because you have these two people who are SO anti-commitment but they’re constantly talking about it with each other and it’s a great dichotomy between those ideas of “being with someone forever is stupid” and “but maybe it could happen with you because of x, y, or z and it wouldn’t be THAT bad.”

Anyway, this was my take on a very traditional sort of ending for them; I’ve written uhhh four? fics where they’ve gotten married via drunken accident/insurance fraud/criminal protection so it was fun to explore what a Jeff/Britta proposal would look like. It’s sort of simple and weird and it ends up with them on the kitchen floor because, duh!, but I think what I wanted to do was take the interpretation of Britta’s protests against marriage and commitment as “the lady doth protest too much” because the entire time she’s mocking the idea of proposals being lame and stupid and Jeff sort of knows that she’d want this very simple, very understated sort of thing. She wants it, but she’s BRITTA so she can’t come out and say it; they have to play this stupid “eh whatever, I don’t really care about this, this is dumb” thing before they admit that it IS what they want. :)

You just reminded me so much about that episode. Isn't this the one where Helga describes her parents laughing along with Olga and then when she enters the scene the laugh track just fades. The way it deals with parental neglect for a children's show is pretty amazing.

Yes!!! And she's trying to ask them to take her to school and they ignore her and there's that heartbreaking sequence of her walking alone in the rain. God, I need to watch that episode again. It's just so powerful; I love that it wasn't dumbed down or sanitized even though it was meant for children.
