A little bit about H’aanit’s Middle English in Octopath Traveler
So, first read the article I'm linking below, then come back here. It's clear those expressing concern over this have never set foot in Final Fantasy XIV's Limsa Lominsa, and especially not as a Rogue!

So, yeah, I get it. The people struggling the most are non-native English speakers. And that makes total sense. Those folks might have a legitimate gripe there, haha. But to anybody not in that group, I say: rather than harsh on her vibe, stick with H’aanit's Middle English and let yourself be charmed by it!
As for my comment about Limsa Lominsa and the Rogue's Guild: I mention this because I feel I have a degree of credibility in this arena. Allow me to explain.
When, in a place called Limsa Lominsa, run by one Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn (try pronouncing that correctly the first time you read it!), a man named Captain Jacke sends "whid" that we "must needs bite back" a stolen item from someone "what bit it" from someone else, and instructs you to do so in the "darkmans," and once you've got your "fambles" on it with a "bene" grip and "milled any ruffmans" like the “sorry rooks" they are, you can finally relax, you realize pretty quickly that you either learn the rogue's lingo or find yourself stumbling around like a colt with bare dew beaters on account o' being so hungover so as to forget your beater cases in the mornin'.
What I'm trying to say is, stick with Octopath's Middle English. I learned to manage and get around Limsa Lominsa and the rogues especially by diving into the fiction head first, and I really feel like all the more a part of the world of Final Fantasy XIV as a result.
H’aanit's Middle English might just do the same for you!
Ahem, The Rogue's Code, Good Sir, from the Opening Rogue's Quest (At least the three major MUST FOLLOW POINTS):
1) Do not steal from fellow Lominsans. This is probably in regards to Lominsan Merchants/Civilians/Etc. You don't ruin the people you're sworn to protect and serve from the shadows. Unless they break the Code, obviously.
2) Don't screw anyone out of their hard-earned reward. If they earned it, it's theirs. Period. Whoever did the work, gets the prize. You don't steal it out from under them. Unless they break the Code.
3) Absolutely. No. Slavetrade. Slavers are Kill on Sight. No exceptions, no explanations, no mercy. Any and all slavers of any and all types are dead to you.
In the end, a big part of it is making sure goods go, or return, to whomever rightfully owns them. And, in the end, the 'bigger picture' of the Rogue's Code is... bigger.
But those are the three absolute tenants. Follow those or get out, basically. These are the three you absolutely do not break, and absolutely must uphold.
I’d like to add that watching the cut scenes again there is one other: don’t “betray yer mates”.
