The first women's only Rollapaluza was a treat. Edited these photos today and all of them put a big grin on my face. I have a huge list of people I need to thank for the prizes. It means a lot. We must continue to support one another. Support the scene. Watching groups, pals, partners, cheer each other on gave me so much joy. It's a pleasure that I still get to facilitate rad people having fun on bikes. More this please 2017.

Friends of the Herne Hill Velodrome have partnered with Rollapaluza for The Spring Opener, with a team roller racing event on Wednesday 30th of March at The Ivy House in Nunhead. Fun event for a great cause...

  Rollapaluza’s Keirin Manchester Presented by Brakes at the National Cycling Centre

  Rollapaluza’s Keirin festival came to Manchester’s famous National Cycling Centre for the first time on Saturday night, bringing indoors the excitement and atmosphere of the fast-paced event that has been such a hit at London’s outdoor Herne Hill velodrome for the last two years.

  An international field of elite riders battled for the huge cash prize pot in the Brake’s sponsored male event with many of the UK’s top sprint talent facing riders from the Netherland’s, Latvia, Ghana, Angola and the mighty Damian Zieleinski of Poland. The female competition drew the best emerging talent from the UK sprint scene.

  In a nod to the Japanese roots of Keirin, racers wore brightly coloured jerseys similar to those used in traditional Keirin races whilst spectators enjoyed Japanese noodles and sushi.                             In the male Keirin competition, racers worked their way through three rounds, facing different riders in each heat amassing points from their performances.

  The last round was a series of finals; riders with the best scores competing in the major final for the podium positions, whilst there were three finals for positions 7th – 24th.

  Throughout the night the seeded riders – Craig Maclean, Pete Mitchell, John Paul and Damian Zieleinski – dominated their heats, all attaining three straight wins, but Matt Rotherham also impressed, using his power and tactics he only lost out once coming second to Pete Mitchell in the first round.

  Jonathan Mitchell also made it into the final with one win and two second place rides. The fastest race of the night was in round two, heat three won by John Paul with a final 200m time of 10.62 seconds!

  Continued overleaf…     Such dominant racing from the top riders made the final an open and exciting affair with no clear favourite. In the end the ‘on form’ Damian Zielinski took the win by one length from Matt Rotherham, Pete Mitchell, Craig Maclean, John Paul and Jonathan Mitchell. The minor final was exceptionally close with Dutch rider Michael Veen and ‘back from retirement’ David Daniell grabbing the last two cash prize spots of 7th and 8th.

  The women’s event, sponsored by Yellow Jersey cyclist’s insurance, was equally exciting with close and competitive racing at the head of the field.

  After the semi finals, Keirin London 2012 winner Rachel James, and Lauren Bate-Low and Sophie Capewell looked to be the clear favourites, with Rachel representing experience and proven speed against her younger challengers.

  She appeared to be dominant until the last 50 metres when an incredibly confident and powerful Sophie Capewell stormed over her to grab the win, with Lauren Bate-Low taking third.

  Continued overleaf…     After its successful first outing in Manchester, Rollapaluza and the National Cycling Centre are already planning the return of this unique event for 2015.
