I am begging all of you to watch Joe Versus the Volcano sometime between now and Valentine’s Day and vote for it in Region 1 of the @romeverafter Rom-Com Bracket. I know that it’s up against Ewan McGregor, but it’s a lesser McGregor and you can show him some love by voting for Down With Love, which is an underappreciated masterpiece with singing and great vintage styling.
JVtV is a movie ahead of its time. It was kitschy and referential when those things were out of fashion. It has Meg Ryan in three separate roles, all of them very different. It has Abe Vigoda and Ossie Davis and Nathan Lane and Amanda Plummer and some truly stellar luggage. It has Tom Hanks singing a cowboy song while accompanying himself on a ukulele. It was written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, the guy who did Moonstruck. It’s weird and quirky and absolutely the best Hanks/Ryan pairing ever put to film.
For my book friends, I will say this: When I first read House in the Cerulean Sea it gave me the same vibes as this movie and that is what made me fall in love with that book. So, if you are in love with that book, you should give this movie a try.
