Detective Jo Hye Soo (Kim Mi Kyung) has led an exemplary career in the police for 35 years and has finally decided that the next year will be her last working one.  Her calm and sharp character have made her known as a buddha by her peers, who respect and appreciate her. Her relationship with her second husband is as tender as in their first days and she considers her two step-children as her own. 

Her peaceful life then gets shattered after she is given a new partner, a young woman named Nam Kyung Wan, who is well known for being a troublemaker.

Nam Kyung Wan (Jung Eun Ji) is infamous for serving in the army before assaulting her captain in front of multiple witnesses. Despite this incident, she was still accepted at the Korea National Police University. Rumours have been following her ever since. In spite of her military background, Detective Nam displays a formidable disdain for rules and authority.

Detective Jo is unhappy with her new partner, whom she regards as uncontrollable and turbulent. Though Jo Hye Soo has a good instinct, she investigates while following evidences. She doesn’t get close to people easily due to a wound from her past. Meanwhile, the friendly Detective Nam knows how to use her personal connections to help her investigations. While unambitious, her keen power of observation and her excellent physical condition have helped her find her own place at work regardless of her past.

Detective Jo slowly warms up to Nam Kyung Wan until she receives a phone call from a mysterious woman (Kim Hye Yoon) who informs her that her name is Jang So Ran and that she has been murdered by Kang Ha Rim. Kang Ha Rim is the son of Jo Hye Soo who killed himself five years ago. 

The next day, a young man (Kwak Dong Yeon) arrives at the police station to report his girlfriend, Jang So Ran, as a missing person. Evidences of Jang So Ran being present at crime scenes keep appearing and the case quickly becomes stranger and stranger.

Jo Hye Soo and Nam Kyung Wan set out to find the truth which links Jang So Ran, Kang Ha Rim, and several other victims together.

Ji Ran, No Soo and Namsoon work under King Yeomra. They must toil as Grim Reapers for a millennium in order to be reincarnated as humans again.

Ji Ran (Gong Yoo) remains calm under any situation which doesn’t involve his superiors. He tends to complain a lot. Despite his solemn attitude, he is known for being clumsy and petty.

No Soo (Kim Beom) is an excellent fighter who dislikes making any superfluous effort. His cheeky attitude often gets him in trouble. He is terrible at paperwork and usually relies on his charm to get out of it.

Namsoon (Lee Re) is an excellent worker who is serious and diligent however her foul temper is notorious. She dislikes getting involved with the deceaseds but hides a soft heart behind her cold attitude.  

The trio’s tasks vary between chasing runaway ghosts, tracking corrupted souls and guiding the deceaseds through the underworld.

Seol Hee (Moon So Ri) is another worker of Yeomra. She serves as the prosecutor when the souls arrives at the death office. She shares a complicated past with Ji Ran, which fuels rumors within the underworld.

Yeol (Jo Bo Ah) is a demon. She is charged with consuming the souls of the condamned deceaseds. She and No Soo developped a frenemy relationship throughout their years of service.

Sun Young (Ye Ji Won) died in 1987 and has been stuck at the death office ever since then. For a mysterious reason, she is unable to move to the afterlife despite her case having been processed. She has since then been serving as a secretary to Seol Hee.

Ji Ran, No Soo and Namsoon’s contract with King Yeomra finally approaches its end yet complications arrise in the Underworld due to a massive strike from both the workers and the deceaseds.

Soo Ho is a orange farmer from a small island. He lives with Nam Soon Im (Na Moon Hee), Kang Yoo Sok (Byun Hee Bong) and their orphaned grand-daughter Nam Oh Ram (Shin Rin Ah). Soo Ho has no blood relation with any of them yet he shares and protects their home and takes care of Oh Ram as if she was his younger sister. 

When money and food go scarce, Soo Ho goes out to fish on Yoo Sok’s old boat. One day, instead of of hauling fishes, he finds a woman (Hyeri) inside his net.

Soo Ho brings the young woman home. Oh Ram immediately gets attached to her and names her Shi Yoon. Shi Yoon doesn’t talk much but she is warm and gentle. She never speaks about her past or how she ended up in Soo Ho’s fishnet. As days pass, she slowly open up to the little family.

Soon Im and Yoo Sok believe that Shi Yoon is one of the mermaid their fathers used to tell stories about. Oh Ram, who is prone to flights of fantasy, listens to them with fascination. Although Soo Ho doesn’t believe in their silly fables, he is puzzled by Shi Yoon and her secrets.

A stranger arrives to the island, looking for a young woman who fits Shi Yoon’s description. Shi Yoon then gets caught up by her past.
