Oh friends. I just sent an email to a publisher to check in on a query because their site says they will respond either way and it’s been a while.

All the logic says to check in, because anything could happen and it could have been lost! Worst case scenario, they just let me know that it’s a pass.

But my introvert brain/heart/skin/guts are all like, “Nope. You’re bothering people. That silence is a polite hell no. You should just leave them alone.”

But I climbed out of my introvert brain/heart/skin/guts and did the thing anyway because I really really want to write books! A lot of books! This is not going to be the last query adventure...

Today, I am trying to polish this query letter I wrote for DTMS and write a 3-5 page synopsis. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to do a synopsis of something you wrote but it’s awful. This is not my skillset! It took me 70k to write the story. If I could have done it in 5 pages, I would have!

How did today’s café writing session go, you ask?

I completely rewrote the query letter because query letters are hard. Stupid hard. Harder than writing the book, hard. Query letters are literally asking awkward introverts (me. it’s just me) to pitch themselves and their baby like they’re totally worthwhile and awesome! 

I worked on edits for the new sci-fi romance book. (not the contemporary one I’m querying. different book. still sexy though.) It’s looking pretty darn good and I am quite smitten with it.

I tried the seasonal creme brule latte at the café. It was drinkable...but never again. Maybe if it had been on ice?

And I worked on some Asher/Darlin/David goodness. <3

Who Owns Romance Reader Data?

What happened to romance reader surveys? Audience research in the age of the data economy.

An interesting read, for sure.

For every 100 books published by the leading romance publishers in 2019, only 8.3 were written by people of color. That compares to 7.7% in 2018, 6.2% in 2017 and 7.8% in 2016. An increase of 0.4% industry-wide over four years.

Every solution we have come up with has a fundamental problem: it puts the onus on fixing this injustice on people who are not responsible for it. Agents, booksellers, and other authors can and should do their best. But ultimately, unless acquiring editors purchase more manuscripts for publication by authors of color, these numbers will remain the same.

The Ripped Bodice did their thing in measuring the stats of Indigenous people/People of color in romance and writing romance. And welp, the stats were worse than in 2016. Many publishers didn’t bother to get involved in these stats, possibly because they already knew how bad their numbers were.
