a knock at your bedroom door startles you from your half-asleep state. you rub the sleep from your eyes, squinting at the rays of morning sunlight that peek through your blinds. you cringe as you catch sight of yourself in the mirror; your hair’s an absolute mess, and god are the circles under your eyes really that dark? you get out of bed with a groan, shuffling across the floor towards your closed door. you hardly slept last night, as you had had the wonderful experience of discovering the hard way that your roommate of three weeks is, in fact, a werewolf.
--
it had been a long day at work and you had texted chan that you’d be staying over at your best friend’s house for the night. unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned and you found yourself returning to your shared apartment. you texted chan to let him know you’d be coming home, and figured he was too busy to respond right away.
you entered an oddly dark apartment--you wondered if chan was home at all, but noticed his shoes were by the door and his jacket was draped haphazardly over the couch. you caught a glimpse of the full moon outside the open window, and you took a moment to appreciate its beauty as bright moonbeams illuminated the room with a soft blue glow. you were shaken from your thoughts at a dull thump coming from chan’s room, followed by a strange scratching noise. does he have an animal in there? you couldn’t help but wonder to yourself as you heard what sounded like scrabbling claws on the hardwood floor--and was that a whimper??
you slowly approached the closed door, your apartment eerily silent save for the strange noises coming from chan’s room. peeking underneath the door, you were surprised to see that no lights were on; weird, considering it wasn’t that late yet and in the couple weeks you’ve known chan you’ve never seen him go to bed before midnight.
“chan?” you called out softly, knocking gently on the door. the sounds paused for a moment, and you were unsure of what to do next.
“...can i come in?” you asked after the silence continued. there was more scuffling behind the door, and you shrieked as you heard a loud bang from the other side. hurriedly, you ran to the kitchen and grabbed the biggest knife you could find before heading back to the mysterious room. heart racing, you slowly turned the handle and pushed open the door with a slow creak that sounded like something out of a cheesy horror movie.
in the darkness, you couldn’t see much besides a large silhouette outlined in the bright moonlight; you could see the rise and fall of a creature’s chest as it breathed heavily. you flicked on the light and gasped, dropping the knife to the floor. the loud clatter pierced the relatively silent room, and the creature’s gaze snapped up to meet yours. you stood frozen for a second, trying to understand what on earth a wolf was doing in your roommate’s bedroom. and ok sure, you know wolves are supposed to be big, but was this one bigger than normal? however what really threw you off was the wolf’s eyes; not the piercing blue or yellow you expected them to be, no, you knew these eyes all too well. they were the eyes you looked into when you laughed too hard at dumb videos together, the eyes that welcomed you home after a long day at work, the eyes of the boy you maybe kinda had developed a crush on despite knowing him for such a short time. you were staring directly into the eyes of your roommate, bang chan.
supernatural beings weren’t unheard of, but you chose not to believe the stories you heard on the news or through friends and coworkers. to be honest, you were quite scared of the thought that such creatures really existed in this world, living and walking amongst the crowds. you typically turned a blind eye to tales of pale skinned people lurking in alleyways at night or small animals going missing on full moons. unfortunately for you, it would be hard to pretend they didn’t exist when one was standing right in front of you.
--
you open the door cautiously, not sure what to expect on the other side. is he human-chan or wolf-chan, or some strange mix of the two? you peek through the crack and, luckily, human-chan stands awkwardly as you stand and stare at him, unblinking.
“hey y/n, um, so about last ni-”
“you couldn’t have told me you were a werewolf before the full moon?” you ask in annoyance, rubbing a hand over your face.
“well, i didn’t want you to freak out!”
“...so you thought me coming home to find a GIANT WOLF in your room would keep me totally calm??”
“ok ok look, i’m really sorry you had to find out this way,” chan says with a sigh, looking down at the floor. “i just-i didn’t want you to get scared and kick me out, y’know. i really like y-being roommates with you.”
you stare at chan in silence for a moment, thinking to yourself.
“i understand if you want me to move out, i can start looking for oth-”
“so do you like, howl at the moon and stuff?” you ask, folding your arms and leaning casually against the door frame. chan pauses and looks up at you, visibly relaxing at the teasing expression behind your tired eyes.
“i mean... sometimes,” he answers sheepishly.
“what about being pet? do you like scratches behind the ears?” you mock as you reach up to ruffle his hair. chan swats your hands away, cheeks flushed pink.
“no!!! well...kind of...i guess,” he explains, and you can’t help but laugh at the flustered mess of a boy standing before you.
“noted. well, why don’t you explain everything to me over breakfast? i dunno about you, but i’m hungry as a wolf,” you joke, wiggling your eyebrows.
“ha ha. funny,” chan deadpans. “but that sounds good to me, i’m starving!” chan grabs his coat and wallet, and you join him as the two of you leave your apartment, locking the door behind you. as you head down the stairs, a man on the way up gives you a look, and you have to suppress a giggle as chan growls lowly and grabs your arm protectively.
“what was that about?” you tease as you walk out into the crisp sunny morning.
“sorry, i can’t help it, it’s instinct,” he groans, embarrassed at himself.
“sounds like i’ve got a lot to learn about you,” you state. “and chan?”
“yeah?”
“..i really like being roommates with you too.”
